Hi all!

My husband applied for the I-751 in March 2017. We decided in March 2018 to go ahead and electronically apply for the n400. My husband also had to travel out of country, so he made an info pass for his I-551 stamp. When he went in the officer told him he had made a mistake filing the n400.  The officer explained we would have to call in to get his n400 activated again after the I-751 approval. As he explained it, the application would be put aside until his I-751 was adjucated. Chances were they would forget the n400 without an inquiry call.

Well, in June 2018 we received notification that he had his naturalization interview. There was no mention of his I-751 interview. We began to prepare for the naturalization interview, and I just planned to go in case there was another interview.  Well, last Wednesday they sent notification of the I-751. It will also be tomorrow. We were a little frazzled because they requested employment letters and a few other things. We have everything, but we were a little sad there was less than a week’s notice for the new things. Yes, we already have most of it, but it would have been nice to not feel like it’s a rush job.

So, today we will spend all our time reviewing the paperwork and asking ourselves questions we might receive. Hopeful for a positive outcome and thankful the officer who told my husband we made a mistake was mistaken himself.

As we all know that some immigration officers are not as trained as they should be.

I can see some immigration officers thinking that this new regulation will apply to every case from 9/11!  :bonk:

Let's hope it only applies to new applications after 9/11.

Oh, that's right!    I guess I'm delaying everyone's application in Seattle including my own application!

Bus!!?? :wow::wow::wow:   You mean USCIS is not even going to pay for a one-way Amtrack ticket!!??

When a new policy/law whatever you call it comes into play, it usually effective staring from the release day. It is the same story with DACA -- any changes to the existing procedures affected new applicants only.

& Good luck Austin! :-) When you have a picture of you screaming while holding your naturalization, just share! I bet we all want to see your face heheh :P

You are probably right. If that is the case, then people who applied prior to 9/11 are safe, but with the incompetent nature of USCIS, like AustinCanada said, some officers might make mistakes. Hopefully the Trump purge won't effect applicants like AustinCanada.

Hi, there is nothing to be worried. These days some applicants get two letters one for N-400 and other for I-751 depending on their field office. It will be a combined interview. Eventually, USCIS will implement the two-letter policy across the board or one letter for both. My joint interview is next week and I got only one letter which is for N-400. The letter I got is designed for N-400 without mentioning I-751. It is because my field office does it this way. Having said that, last month when I went to my field office to get the extension stamp. I was told by the officer that bring your spouse to the N-400 interview because we will take your I-751 interview first then move to N-400. I am positive you will do well. Keep us posted. Best wishes

Hi! I got news! My interview was scheduled today! It's funny, it happened probably because I went this morning to get a second six month extension (I551) stamp. The officer did not mention anything. Just gave me another 6 months. Then, about 4 hours later, my status change and interview for N-400 has been scheduled. I don't know if the interview will combine both processes but I imagine yes because it seems that getting the new extension, which is link to the I751, stirred my N400 processes and therefore my change in status. I' so happy! Name O boy, please keep us posted! You're going first. I think my wait will be over soon. Good to luck to everybody else waiting !!!! Have faith, it will come soon.

We never received a notice of a pending I751 interview, but I went with my wife for her N400 interview and sure enough, the IO asked me to come back for a joint I751 interview.  That interview was very simple, the IO went through the bio information on the I751 and asked us to verify it, then she asked if we had any additional evidence, so I gave her the past two year's tax returns.  Easy peasy.  Then I was escorted out and my wife went through her N400 interview which took about 15 minutes.  The upshot is don't fret too much about the I751 interview.  Just make sure you are ready to not receive a final answer on the I751 at the interview.  Even though our IO was positive at our interview, the file was subsequently sent to NBC and we received the approval NOA for the I751 about a month later.

Good Luck!

Yes, you can apply.

Hard to say, but in our case no, filing the N400 did not cause the I751 to slow down, it actually sped things up a little as we received the approval NOA a few weeks before other CSC filers did from our filing period and now my wife is also naturalized, so we are done.  If naturalization is the ultimate goal, why wait for the I751 clock to complete before starting the N400 clock?  That was our logic.

Good Luck!

Yes, it's always good to stir the pot, so to speak. My wife received her notice of n400 interview scheduled one day after we called USCIS and asked if they have any additional information on the status of our case. We too were surprised that the notice came right after we contacted them, but not too surprised. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Okay, I'm out of metaphors now.
