F1 visa administrative processing

It is a country issue. They are probably doing a more thorough background check. 

 

By the way, an August 20 interview was already late because classes start roughly around that time. So it would have been hard to start classes and get settled on time even if they gave you the passport back in a week.

 

Even if you get the passport back now, you'd have to wait until a couple of weeks before the next semester starts to get to the US. If you go too early you would not be a full time student.

 

If you want to get an update you can e-mail the consulate and let them know you deferred admission for the Spring semester. I doubt you will get much from them, but you can try.
