Hi. I applied for my adjustment of status last July. Already have receipts, have my biometrics done and still waiting for updates now. My question is can I travel within US by car and not have a problem of being deported. Someone told me that if my mother in law (the driver) got pulled over or something for speeding for example that i would be deported cause I dont have a valid green card yet even I have all the receipts that I am processing my adjustment of status. The reason I'm asking is because we live in Michigan and want to drive down to virginia to visit my sister in law and her newborn daughter. Originally I planned on going and just have all the receipts and all paperwork I have with me. But after telling it to someone I know, she told me that i could get deported if we get pulled over or something. And also she told me that immigration officers are scattered along the states and might get me deported especially it's near washington or something like that. It's so confusing but I don't wanna have problems with my immigration processing so pls help. Anyone here experience travelling by car to a different state when you are in the process of applying for green card based on marriage and don't have your past visa expired already?

As stated above you are fine.

Have you not received your EAD yet? / Have some sort of US ID?

No. I'm still waiting for it. I'm just not sure if it would arrive before we have to go for virginia.  All I have right now as an ID is my new passport which have my husband's last name already.  That's why the DMV wouldn't allow me to get my state ID because my name in SS card is still my maiden name so it doesn't match my passport and can't change my name in my SS card till I get my ead card.

Oops, when you said 'last July' I thought you meant last year July.

Anyways your passport is enough. If it makes you feel more comfortable you can always photocopy your I-797's and keep them inside your passport.

Enjoy your trip!
