I do feel ripped off about a lot of things BUT I am about to move to the US where health insurance for my family is going to cost us $11,000 a year. And I still have to pay co-pays and deductibles on top. The health care had better be REALLY amazing out there for that price.

Hey and on top of all that, they won't cover any of our pre-existing conditions for the first year. What a GREAT system!

PS neither me or any of my children pay any National Insurance in the UK... where did the idea that everyone pays it come from?

I'm surprised they cover your pre-existing at all, frankly. Normally they don't (Without a high fee).

Do you work in the UK? I had to have a NIN when I worked in the UK.

Well it turns out my husband broke his foot last night, he flies to the US next Friday to start his new job, so we are going to be paying for all his care out of pocket once he gets there. If only he was staying in the UK he could continue to get NHS care at no further cost, but hey... I'm sure all those cheap burgers and webcams waiting for him in the US will make up for it lol!

I don't work in the UK, but I do have a National Insurance Number - you get one when you turn 16.

Is it a hard cast?

Feet are prolly different than hands, but when D broke his hand and had it in a hard cast, he was told he couldn't fly with it on.

Has that changed? Or maybe they were uninformed?

Either way, hope your hub gets better!

I broke my foot a couple of years ago (double fracture of the fifth metatarsal, if anyone is interested! lol) and had on a non weight bearing fibreglass cast. I even got to choose a colour (purple!).

The NHS slapped on the cast, told me to come back in a month. All they did then was cut off the cast and re-xray me. It won't be too cheap to get sorted in the USA but, if it has healed all right, it won't be exorbitant.

The only problem he might have flying with it is the swelling. It could be REALLY painful and damage the position of the healing bones. I really would get him to double check it is safe to fly with it on.

Thanks for the feedback on the foot (to LisaD as well). He doesn't have a cast, it's just strapped up. It's really a tiny break so I hope it heals easily. He goes to the fracture clinic in the local hospital on Sunday and will ask the doc there if it's okay to fly, and will get a letter from him/her if it is. Not really what we needed at this stage but it could have been a lot worse so I am grateful for that :-)
