Hey there everyone. So my husband is in the process of AOS. He just received his EAD today in the mail so we are going tomorrow to get his social security card. My husband has two last names, and would only like to use his paternal last name in the US. His birth certificate and EAD card all have his both last names. So I was wondering if on the social security application he can just use the paternal last name and underneath where it asks for other names used, put the maternal last name. I guess I’m wondering when is the best chance to make that change in this whole process? If we wait until after he gets the green card he would have to renew all of his IDs all over again so it just makes sense to start this trend on his first official US document.

Just based on my personal experience...I am not able to use a name on my Social that is different from what DHS has on file (I want to use my married name, but had filed for AOS with my maiden name).   I went in person to change my SSN, and they would not allow it until DHS showed the updated name on their systems.  So whatever name he used on his immigration/visa paperwork is what they will use.  You cannot change the name on the SSN until after DHS officially changes to that name.

You can change your name with DHS at any time (for a fee, with a form) or for free when you are applying for the next stage (I am changing it through ROC).

What name has he used on his AOS?

His two last names. ☹️   Is the ROC when you’ve had your green card for two years and are applying for citizenship?
