I864 Joint sponsor household size

Hi Everyone,

 

I am filling out the I-864 for my joint sponsor. They ask for his household size.  He is single and only claims himself but when I fill in the form it lists 2 for his household size-himself and my wife.  Is that correct? Even though we don't live with him and he only claims one on his tax returns? Im assuming it just means he is now financially responsible for her.  Please let me know!  Thank you!!!

yes, the beneficiary is always counted, that's why the minimum is 2, the joint sponsor and the beneficiary, who is your wife in this case

Thank you!  And just to confirm:  When I filled out the I-864 my household total was 3 (1 for myself, 1 for the beneficiary-my wife, 1 for my spouse).  But my household size is in fact only 2. To fix this I had to put 0  for  #3 "Add 1 for your spouse".  Please let me know if this is correct!  Thanks!!!

I'm also confused as you say beneficiary-wife, and then your spouse? Are they not the same people?

You have to add 1 for yourself. 1 for the applicant which is my wife and they also ask you to add 1 for your spouse.  I read that if the applicant is also your spouse you should put 0 for spouse so that you avoid counting anyone twice.  It seemed a little strange but my household size is only two and now the result is two so....

Seems like you corrected it. 1-For Applicant, 1- for beneficiary, 0-If beneficiary is also Spouse. (If any kids or other relatives on the petition then they would be counted)

Thanks, donddon!  This is a very confusing part I read a lot of people get tripped up on.  Appreciate the help everyone!!!!!
