Hello,

I am filing out the I-864 and I have a few questions.I believe that I cannot count my income or my wives income since we are living in Japan....so that means we can only include the money in the bank and assets...or co sponsor...so for an household of 2(me and her)...would $80, 000 be enough to meet the 2 year requirement??I have 4 bank accounts, 2 in the states(saving and checking which i have maintained for over 15 years and 2 in Japan.)

If I dont have a job in the states.. would that affect my chances of getting this approved???...we are planning to move back and live with my parents for a while.

I think by having a valid DL, 2 current bank accounts that I wouldnt have a problem with establishing a domicile....RIGHT???

It's probably enough but double and triple check. You also have to show evidence of all of these assets. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a co-sponsor just in case.

I had my parents send me a a formal letter from the bank(with accounts #'s,balances and cod's amount as well as my current statements from the bank with the account balances and cod's.

I will go this week to my Japanese banks and get the same thing for me and my wife.

I believe we would have about 80,000 total in USD...so i think that would meet the required amount of money....

I can only share our experience with you. We self-sponsored my husband and used the projected profit from the sale of our house as an asset. We were told by the interviewer in London that a figure in the region of $80,000 USD was "sufficient." However, this was last year and figures on I-864s change year-to-year as the poverty level goes up with inflation. You can't rely on figures from last year, let alone 2-3 years ago...especially if you're right on the line or perhaps just a smidge short of it. $80,000 USD MAY be enough, but you may be a few thousand dollars short. It is up to you to find out precisely how much in assets you will need. I was under the impression that we needed over $100,000 USD in liquid/easily liquidated assets to overcome the fact that both of us work in the UK instead of the US. At the interview the figure they gave me was less.

Verify, verify, verify, verify, verify everything yourself. People on this board give great advice and they're usually right, but not always. It's your own responsibility to ensure that your income/assets are sufficient or to determine whether you need a co-sponsor. If I were you I would get my co-sponsors to go ahead and fill out the I-864 so you don't go to the interview, find out you're a few thou short, and have to submit an affadavit from a co-sponsor after you've waited for them to fill it in. It's not an easy document to fill in either; gathering the evidence for it takes time, and you have to be careful filling it in since it is legally binding.

I was 99.99% certain we would not need a co-sponsor and I was right, but my parents filled out an affadavit of support anyway just in case I was wrong. I shredded it and burned it (at their request) after the interview, but had I needed it we would have had it immediately to hand. No snags, no tears.

No, you need way more than $17,113. I can't remember if you multiply it by 3 or by 5. 5 sounds right. You should have a copy of the I-864 in front of you, and if you don't you can download it; what does it say? Go with what it says.

Please read the form instructions from the version of I-864 posted at uscis.gov

However,if you are a U.S. citizen and you are sponsoring your spouseor minor child, the total value of your assets must only beequal to at least three times the difference

You can often use the equity in your real estate as an asset. I did.

Market value minus mortgage = equity.

$85,565 - $51,339 = this would mean im short...$34,226....and i assume i cant use my wifes assets because i can only use assets X 3. RIGHT.....??????????

So....i guess i need a co-sponsor since im unable to use my foreign income and use more than X 3 for assets....

I'm sorry, I don't follow you.

Assets are items of value that you can liquidate within 12 months. They 'count' at 1/3 value.

If the income level you're trying to hit is $17113, multiply that by 3 = $51339. You may use assets valued at $51339 or higher to satisfy the I-864.

If YOU own assets and your wife owns assets, you may add them together.

Forget the X5 and the $85K.. this is nothing to do with you. You need annual US income of $17K+ OR assets held anywhere, by you or wife, equal to $51K+/

If your Japanese income will not continue in the US, then no, you may not 'count' it on your I-864.

Cash is *always* good.

Assets can be CASH --or-- other 'stuff' you could sell or turn into cash. Cash is simple tho.

If you go asset-only, the CO may want to ask you about your work plans/job offers etc for when you get back to the US. Any of that that you can document, all the better, but be prepared to sell yourself a little, and explain how easy it will be for you to find a top position in your field because the whole industry is waiting for you to get back from Japan so they can all hire you.

It also does not hurt to document your income from Japan--you can do this with an addendum to the I-864, showing that you have been earning income in Japan. If you write it in a letter, back it up with evidence (pay stub or what ever). Always put all the identifying case info at the top of an addendum (USC name + SS#+ case number if you have etc)
