I've been trying to get a definitive answer for this from the website but no luck.

I was born in Vietnam and was naturalized here.  The only thing I have that proves my citizenship is my US passport.

I'm assuming the birth certificate is used to determine US citizenship.  I do not have my birth certificate or my naturalization cert...Lost both a long time ago.

My lawyer said my passport will suffice and I should not worry about it.

Should I worry?  Should I fork over the 550 to get a copy of my naturalization cert?

For some context, I am looking ahead to the interview process I sent off my K1 last month.

You should somehow try to obtain both even if this process doesn't require. I don't think the packet 3 instruction asks for petitioner's birth certificate, but I sent it to her anyway. As for Naturalization Cert, I-129F does require it when you submit the package. Have you submitted the package yet? please update your timeline if you get a chance.

Best luck.

I would

what happens when passport renews and you mail it in and it gets lost?

and trust me government offices and even the mail loose things

sounds like a lot of money but small price to pay considering what u would go thru if you ever loose or misplace or have passport stolen

I-129F does not specifically ask for naturalization...just something that proves your US citizenship.  In my case US passport.  I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain I am right.  I have submitted my I-129F already last month.

The US passport is proof of being a USC. The bio page is required, and the instructions until just recently said to send all pages of the passport. Now the instructions just say to provide a copy of the passport, which is more ambiguous. To be safe, sending a copy of all pages of the passport is suggested.

Having a certified copy of your BC is still a good idea for the future. I don't see a particular need for the naturalization certificate copy since you already have a passport and have not changed your name since it was issued.

You're right. It's been a while. I submitted both just to be safe rather than taking a chance back then. But I would try to get your BC if I were you, you don't know when you need it in the future.

Try to acquire a copy, even if it's after the 129 submission. When your fiancee gets to the point that she's building the K-1 packet in Vietnam, one of the items on that list is the petitioner's original birth certificate. I expect the consulate will be more particular than USCIS, so while you may be able to explain why you don't have one and your passport may suffice, you will save yourself a bit of hassle and anxiety on the interview day if you have one in hand.

Don't tell me you left out Questions 40a thru 42c on the I-129F.

You will need your Cert of Naturalization at time of the interview so better get a replacement copy now before it's too late. It took 6 months for my brother to get his, fyi.

I went to the field office to get the naturalization number and date.  I have seen no requirement of the naturalization cert anywhere aside from being a form of citizenship, which a US passport will serve the same deal.

You need a cert of naturalization when you apply for a US passport.  So by logic the US passport should be the definitive proof of citizenship.

Also getting my original Birth certificate is out of the question.  I literally have no idea if that is even obtainable right now.  Like stated above the birth certificate proves US citizenship if you are born in the US.  The naturalization cert proves citizenship and the passport required both to obtain.

So in essence if you have a US passport you must have had the other two at some point in time.

I will apply for the cert of naturalization copy asap.  I supplied the naturalization number I got from the field office on the I129F.

Your original birth certificate won't prove that you are a U.S. Citizen because you were born in VN. So it's worthless to USCIS even if you had it.

I sincerely hope that you will receive the replacement before your fiancee's interview. Or she might get a Blue slip and that would be another huge headache.
