Do I need health insurance while waiting for COS?

My husband said that people in America who don't file for an exemption for health insurance could get charged as high as $600 since it's under their law that all citizens should get health insurance.

 

How about for my case? I arrived in the US on August 15 and sent my AOS to USCIS on Oct 13. It's been 2 months of no health insurance for me.

From my understanding you can only get the penalty if you're uninsured AND a LPR or citizen. You won't become an LPR until the day your AOS has been approved.

Thanks for this. I guess I can't wait until the AOS is approved since the clock will start ticking once it does. I should be insured before then.

I am not positive on this, however if you file a joint tax form and have a social security number, there may be something in there that you may need to show proof.  However, the $600 fine is probably a lot less than what you will have to pay for that insurance, as well, if you use it, the out of pocket fees are by design,  staggering for many!

You can sign up with the receipt notice I-797 from AOS.
