Help required please.

We are currently awaiting NOA2 as a June filer and I am visiting US in November. I'm hoping to have everything good to move to US end January 2018. My question is this:

My UK passport expires in January 2019, does anyone know if it's a real hassle renewing from tne US, or is it worth applying for a new 10 year passport when i return from my visit in December 2017? Will having a new passport affect my visa application in any way and or what would I need to do?

Thank you in advance,

Tim & Tiff

A new passport ordered from the US gets done in the UK. Mostly it's just the extra charge for the courier service to get it back to you. You will mail in photos and the old passport. New and old get returned to you.

My thoughts...you want a valid passport to last you through your AOS/EAD/AP processing because it will be your primary photo ID for SSN, biometrics, interview. You don't want to mail your passport off to the UK right when you need it for ID. Of course once you get the EAD card, you can get a state driver license so you have new photo ID to use for most purposes. The gap between EAD card and greencard could be a good time to renew.

If you renew before your interview, it is fine with the London consulate. Many have gone with a new passport and different number than what they started with and there was no issue at all. Just show up with a valid passport and you're good. They do require you to have six months left on your passport when you interview.

Really helpful, thank you for posting this.

We just got our NOA2 on Tuesday (May filer) and my passport expires July next year. Technically I would have enough time if the interview is December but it's cutting it a bit fine! Was worried that the new numbers would confuse everything and the absolute horror of starting it all again!

Thanks again

The new passport numbers won't confuse them - so long as your name, dob etc stays the same.

I'd second the advice wuozopo gave above. I renewed my passport during the K1 process so that I knew that I wouldn't have to worry about it expiring once I was in the immigration process in the USA. Fortunately I was living near London so I did a same-day appointment with the passport office there and had my passport within 3-4 hours. There are other passport offices around the country (I recall my brother going to Northampton once). I know several people whose passports have gone missing in the post so I would always renew mine in person - costs more, but peace of mind.
