Can anyone talk about their experience with the medical exam in New Zealand (whether Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch)?  When were you able to schedule it?  What sorts of tests did you have to do?  Just wondering what my fiancé should expect!

Had mine done a couple of months back. You'll get a list of approved doctors from the consulate, and you HAVE to use one of them. Test wise you will get a blood and urine test (you will give a LOT of blood), along with a chest X-ray. There is a brief (in my case) physical and mental evaluation. The doctor will ask about your medical history, wether or not you've had any drug use in your life or dependency on alcohol. The doctor will also go over your vaccination history, so make sure you get a list of all your vaccinations from your GP.  For the physical part of the exam, there is an eye test, a test where you lay down and the doctor pokes around your abdomen, and thats about it. Supposedly there is an external genital check to be done as well for any signs of STD's, but my doctor didn't do that, not sure if they just test it via the blood test now.

EDIT: In terms of scheduling I had to wait until I had my interview letter from the consulate. The doctor needs this along with a bunch of other forms the consulate will send you before you can book the appointment.

Thanks for the info, exactly what I was looking for!  He won't be stoked about the blood test, haha... Which doctor/med centre did you go to?

I went to Dr Anton Wiles at Remuera Doctors in Auckland. It's very close to the blood lab and x-ray places that you will have to go. Basically you go in for a consultation, do the medical, then they send you to the blood lab, have them sign a form, off to the X-ray lab, have them sign a form, then back to the doctors for the final sign off. Can be a bit stressful trying to rush and get it all done but you find that you're generally first priority at the blood lab and X-ray lab since you're paying (quite a bit) for it.

I am a fainter and not looking forward to the blood test.

Does this mean you book your interview before you book your medical? Did you book your interview as soon as you got your NVC number?

Not sure if I've told you this, but the consulate schedules your interview for you, it isn't like some of the other embassy's and consulates around the world that you make a booking online.

Yep, they emailed him his time - he actually emailed back asking if they could move it up and they did.  It's actually in a few hours!

All the best!! I can't wait to hear about it!! Keep us updated. Our case was already sent by USCIS a week ago but neither USCIS nor NVC have it now, working on my last shred of sanity! Hopefully when our interview time comes they give us an early enough date or if we ask for one they give us one!
