Waiting over eight months to get a lousy 15 minute interview for citizenship.  People saying length of time depends how busy the field office is I don't believe this.  Seattle's office hours are Monday through Wednesday  8 till 3.  Thursdays and Fridays from 8 till 12 noon.  They are the ones creating the backlog with these kind of hours. Not to mention all their Federal holidays and paid vacations and sick leave benefits. They need to be more diligent with their hours.  It took my wife 6 months with the I-751 to get her 10 year greencard which involved much more documentation and paperwork than the N-400. Now waiting for a 20 minute interview for over 8 months.  USCIS has their priorities all mixed up

I waited 11 months for the ten-year card. And over 9 months for the N-400 interview. Two totally different types of application, two completely separate processes.

The hours you mention are Interview hours. There is more going on in the office than interviews, so they don't actual clock out for the day and go home at noon or 3 at 3.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Unfortunately where you live determines the waiting time. Living in Seattle benefited you guys for I-751, but not so much for N-400. Exactly the opposite, living in Boston benefited me for N-400, but not so much for I-751. I understand your frustration, I was like that while waiting for the I-751 but nothing you could do other than patiently waiting. If it's been 8 months already, your interview should be coming up soon. A friend of mine filed his N400 in Seattle early January, he'll be interviewed next week. Good thing about Seattle is they do same day oaths, if everything goes well, you'll walk out as a US citizen the day you get interviewed. Good luck.

I realize this. But these are actual office hours they see no one before 8 am and they see no one after 12 noon or 3 pm.  Much worse than banker hours. Your right they are doing much more after hours like drinking coffee and going home. Also the issue I was making about the 10 year greencard and the N400 process is the I751 process is much more complicating and detailed then the N400 and yet the I751 took much less time

Oh, I know about the same day oath. I only worry that my wife has to wait 8 months to a year and if for some reason she fails the interview then there is at least another 3 months to reschedule to retake. I thank you for your kind response

my field office at Minneapolis,Minnesota is covering 3.5 states residency area( Minnesota, Dorth Dakota, South Dakota, Western Wisconsin), has about 3500 N400 new applications every month and 15,000 cases pending for interview or oath.

these data is pretty much similar to the seattle office . BUT, our average waiting time is about 12-15 months before interview.

 H1b ---> EB-1A (I-140) ---> I-485 AOS(Green Card) ---> 5 years --->  US Citizenship N400 application

  • Day 011/16/2017, e-filing N400
  • Day 3069/18/2018,  interview day--passed and in line for oath.
  • Day 332: 10/15/2018, Oath Day

No update as of yet, still In line for interview.  I dont know if I should put in for an info pass or still wait.  Again, my N-400 received and accepted on 3/7/2017 and updated to In Line for Interview on 4/17/2017.  I only worry because with the amount of applications and paperwork they deal with, it is very easy for them to misplace it or sitting in a pile on a desk for months and months.  The USCIS is far from being perfect and following Visa Journey for years now I have heard a lot of horror stories about them losing applications, sending out wrong green cards, etc. etc.  So for a 15 minute interview and still waiting almost 10 months gives me a reason to worry.   Thank you for inquiring about my update!!

You’re at the end of the line and should get an interview notice within the next couple of months. Seattle office is dangerously backlogged as of now and it takes on average 11 to 12 months now to process N 400. How do I know? I just recently applied and that’s the estimated completion time as shown on ELIS, and it was also confirmed last week on my info pass appointment when I went to get a stamp on my passport.

Thank you very kindly for your information. It's amazing how you get more information from people going through the same process because USCIS is determined to give no information or help and is leaving people in the dark especially when everyone has to pay for the service in advance (fee) it irritates me when people try to justify that the USCIS is very busy and backlogged. Like any other profitable business they should be hiring more than when they catch up then downsize this would be the logical solution. Again thank you for your very informative  response
