Answer to your question is he's using a policy that he's had since before O'care came into being. It'll be on a lower tier. He can get coverage on an O'care compliant tier but it'll bump his premium. These 'grandfathered' plans don't have to obey all the rules. Their premiums however skyrocketed about the second year into O'care. Some people believed this was intentional to push them into the marketplace (which still had high premiums anyway). My grandfathered plan was hideous junk but worked for me at the time. I could barely afford it eventually as the premium rose and by marriage I dropped it and rerolled into an O'care compliant plan which we also reached a point we couldn't afford. I sure am glad my husband's job offered the best tier care possible. We're set now. It's shocking how much they generously shell out for us two, along side how much he also contributes. I never agreed with the staying on insurance until 26 idea. That's just me though. I think that should be something that could be more 'ala carte' type. For the instances where your adult child has lost a job or has a crisis they need dire help with, and the parent can afford such measures. Or for kids that are getting through college and contributing a little. Not to keep your deadbeat couch potato on, just because.

I am happy you wound up with a decent plan.

No, by fix, I mean fix.  Obamacare has been a disaster.  Of course, it was always intended to be a disaster.  Democratic leaders wanted single-payer health care, but the majority of Americans were perfectly happy with what they had at the time.  They couldn't go straight to single-payer, so they created a system that would fail so miserably and destroy the system so badly, that the only option to save our healthcare system would be to have the government step in and provide a single-payer system.  They almost succeeded, they probably only needed 4 more years to bankrupt the healthcare insurance industry.

Sure, more people have insurance now, but even more people have insurance they can't afford to use, because their deductibles are too high.

So what is the fix?

Obama care rocks. Poor people can pay 400 bucks a month for a policy with a 5K deductible. Thats so affordable.

All plans include preventative care not subject to a deductable.  Using disinformation to Discourage users from getting annual checkups, flushots , cancer screening or immunization when they have paid access is bordering on immoral behavior in my book.

Preventive care benefits for adults

All Marketplace health plans and many other plans must cover the following list of preventive services without charging you a copayment or coinsurance. This is true even if you haven’t met your yearly deductible.

IMPORTANTThese services are free only when delivered by a doctor or other provider in your plan’s network.

  1. Abdominal aortic aneurysm one-time screening for men of specified ages who have ever smoked
  2. Alcohol misuse screening and counseling
  3. Aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease for men and women of certain ages
  4. Blood pressure screening
  5. Cholesterol screening for adults of certain ages or at higher risk
  6. Colorectal cancer screeningfor adults over 50
  7. Depression screening
  8. Diabetes (Type 2) screeningfor adults with high blood pressure
  9. Diet counseling for adults at higher risk for chronic disease

  11. Hepatitis C screening for adults at increased risk, and one time for everyone born 1945 – 1965
  12. HIV screening for everyone ages 15 to 65, and other ages at increased risk

$400?! Man.... those were the days. That was my premium plus more eventually on the grandfathered plan. From O'care onward it was up and up.

But pre O'care people complained about premium costs going up even then.

Btw, the chart really doesn't tell the complete story here. I can tell you right now that amount for 'silver tier' is wrong for MD. I can show you the bills myself. Most average persons don't qualify for the subsidy and that's the problem for a lot of Americans here. It's great when it helps people out, but it doesn't help a lot of vulnerable people out. The average American not qualifying for the subsidy will end up still being too poor to barely be able to afford coverage, and will likely put off seeking treatment when they become ill - until they become very very ill. Preventative care might be covered? Preventative implies the person doesn't have any issues to start out with. Sure. But there's a lot of things that are going to get socked into the deductible hole. And I can give many examples of this. I can show you drugs that are still too expensive for Americans to afford even with insurance. I could break down a couple of my EOBs again and show how much it cost me just to get checked out for a throat infection/flu and how pathetic it counted toward the deductible and how little they paid out to the providers. Or how much it would cost me to go to an ER when I was in an accident so I didn't go, and suffered through the pain.

For MD there is (off the top of my head) only two providers who now holds a monopoly of O'care coverage, along with private markets. This doesn't help lower costs. There are no lower tiers below silver anymore and the jump into gold.. is utter nonsense. When the company offered my husband the choice of plans, after looking through everything... we could have gone with a low tier plan and paid little, but for a couple that might be needing to have regular care pretty soon (I have medical issues I've put off for years because of the cost) the deductible would have been prohibitive. That's the same sort of story no matter where you go, and generally who you ask. Even those who like aspects will tell you, it's just not working. The 'tweaks' they are making now... are going to make it even worse.

Screenings are great. Guess what happens when the screenings are positive and the patient realizes their high-premium-high deductible isn't working for them? When mom had her cancer diagnosis Medicare took care of everything. Had she been on something else... the result would not have been the same.

I never said a word about repealing anything. I think we need to move toward a single payer system. I was just explaining why it did not make medical care affordable.  You know what happens when you assume stuff dont you

Our family qualified for the subsidy in Connecticut and the plan was great, it covered all of our infertility treatments with $0 deductible.

When we moved to Minnesota, we switched to a $0 deductible plan that we pay a subsidized amount into.  It is separate than the obamacare exchanges.  I'm kind of curious who the people are that are having trouble with this issue now and what they are making per year.  I feel like we have a pretty comfortable (for us) salary and one income earner.  We are a typical blue collar family.  So, who are these average people?  Are they choosing to live in housing above the minimum price for their area?  Are they making good financial decisions?  Even if we had a deductible, we'd be able to swing it.  Just having it subsidized is a blessing and one we are forever grateful for.

I think the answer is single payer healthcare, but a lot of red state voters don't know what is in their best interest.
