Green Card Holders Barred from Enlisting

This is kind of disturbing to me, considering that every immigrant of a certain age must be registered with selective service to begin with... but my husband has many immigrant co-workers who have bravely served in the military, and they are wondering if eventually they will be stripped from serving. And it's also... very against the law, even if it turns out to be 'temporary'.

Oct. 18, 2017, 4:39 p.m.: On Wednesday, an Army public affairs officer responded to Mic’s Tuesday report, clarifying that “for the time being,” green card holders cannot enlist in the Army Reserve.

The public affairs officer said this change is necessary thanks to a new Department of Defense policy requiring green card holders to go through stricter vetting standards, requiring that background checks on green card holders be completed before they ship off to basic training.

This story’s headline has been updated, and Mic’s updated article appears below:

Army recruiters have been told to stop enlisting green card holders into the Army Reserve effective immediately, according to an email sent to military recruiters and obtained by Mic, a move that experts say breaks federal law.

“EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY DO NOT ‘SHIP’ OR ‘ENLIST’ ANY FOREIGN NATIONAL’S (ALL I-551 CARD HOLDERS) UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE,” reads an email sent to Army recruiters on Monday by Gregory C. Williamson, chief of the Accessions Suitability Office Guard Strength Division.

More partially fake news. Its only the Army reserve and only because it does not have a delayed entry program. Its temporary measure until the background check can be worked out. Background check must be completed now as opposed to before when it just had to be started

A background check which may take over a year. It is effectively barring any immigrant from attempting to join the Army reserve and the directive essentially told employees to not so much as even enlist them. Do non-citizens get a pass on the background check delays of one year?

Its just a temporary thing until it can be worked out. They can still join the active army or the Guard.  The guard is a vastly superior unit anyway
