My wife is from Peru and she have Peru Driver License. Right now her AOS is processing. She want to get Michigan driver license. Does she need to take written and driving test or she doesn't have to as long she present her valid Peru driver license with English translated to surrender in exchange for Michigan driver license?

hey! i emigrated to michigan last year and did the driver's license process. Your wife will need to sit the written test at the SOS and then book/sit and pass the practical driving test. Then she can go back to the SOS and get her photo taken and then her license will be mailed to her.

the only advantage of having my licence from my home country was that i didn't have to wait 30 days from when i did the written test to then go and do my practical test.

At the end of the day though the tests are ridiculously easy and she should not have any issues with either.

no worries dude, it's a pity the US does not have any "licence for license" style swaps you can do within the EU or say between Canada and the UK. I guess each nation would have negotiate with each US seperately for this arrangement and sure it's just a hassle.

Your wife will have no probs as she is already used to driving on the right hand side i am sure. You can download the theory test rules of the road and practice test stuff from the SOS website or pick up in person if you go in. Either way both the theory and the practical test are very easy and cheap by international standards.

You can even ask your insurer to insure your wife for a short time on her Peruvian licence while she practices for her test/gets used to american drivers (if thats ever possible!) I did this with Auto Owners Insurance policy my wife had (talk to your broker/agent)

Best of luck to you and her and safe driving
