So we got approved for our petition a while back, it now says that my app was sent to the department of state on the 30th of April. Am I supposed to be waiting for a letter in the mail or am I supposed to be contacting someone. Im so confused?

I was under the impression that they send you a package of paperwork to be filled out? Any answers will be very helpful!

They will either email you with the next steps, or mail you a packet.  It took about a month and a half for me to get the next steps from them.

After one month call NVC and confirm you case receiving date,  after this they will advice you to wait at east 8 to 10 weeks for case number and they will send it in between 3 months for your medical and fees . After this your case will forward to your home country US consulate and advice you to select the interview date and time .
