You can apply online at https://www.afp.gov.au/what-we-do/services/criminal-records/national-police-checks

And according to the State Department's Australia Reciprocity Schedule, "Australian Federal Police certificates based on fingerprints are preferred, but a certificate not based on fingerprints is acceptable if it shows all aliases ever used."

I am aware of two London interviews where there was a delay because they wanted the fingerprint version.

See Police Certificates for Other Countries on the London consulate website https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/fiancee-2/required-documents/

They provide a list of local U.K. Police forces that will do the fingerprinting service for your application.

Hi thank you, I went today and got fingerprints done by the police, but they did not take them and check them. So is the fingerprint just for the USA embassy to check ?

No, the consulate won't want to see your prints (they'll take their own copy electronically). If you haven't already made the online name-based application for Australian police certificate, you can download their form and post it with your fingerprints to get a print-based certificate instead.

I'm surprised that London would be such a stickler for fingerprints given they're not required for the British ACRO certificate. Were those cases both delayed for Australian certificates? Or other countries where the state department (or foreign police service) says fingerprint checks must be done?

It is Australia that wants them. Mail with your Australian police certificate application.

The people I am aware of brought their non-fingerprint version of an Australian certificate to their London interview. It wasn't recognized as meeting the requirements for an Aussie police certificate  issued by the Australian Federal Police. They had to order a proper one.  I guess that might be similar to going down to the local station in England and getting some kind of certificate. The embassy would say, "Nope, it has to come from ACRO." Fortunately ACRO will give you one without fingerprints.
