I am currently awaiting my interview for my permanent residency, which won't be until around February (based on information from USCIS current time frame).

Question for anyone who has RECENTLY applied for the I-131 for "ADVANCED PAROLE DOCUMENT FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE UNITED STATES."

I am applying based on humanitarian reasons. I want to go home for Christmas and be able to spend it with my last grandparent, who is older and not in good health. It says that I need to submit "Documentation of a family member’s serious illness or death." Has anyone submitted and been approved recently WITHOUT documentation and just a letter from yourself explaining your reason? And what exactly do they mean by documentation? A letter from a doctor?

TIA!

As a pending AOS applicant you don't need a reason.  Your i485 is your reason.

Just send the application and supporting docs in with a copy of the i-485 NOA1 and hope that it gets approved in time. It currently takes around 4 months to get it approved so it might be tight.

Like Suss said, you don't need a reason to file i-131 when you have a pending i-485. You don't need to fill in the dates for your travel or the reasons for your travel.

I'm surprised you haven't heard anything from them by now, was under the impression that the advanced parole's take about 4-6 months to get approved, but honestly I don't know.

The big mistake many people do is to not file for AP when they file for AOS and EAD, then they realize later on that it would be pretty handy to have AP after all.

I don't see one single reason not to file for AP when you file for AOS. Not one.

Oh, it didn't dawn on me that they didn't file the AP when they applied for their AOS....since you're already in processing maybe it will be faster for you.

The only thing I was wondering about filing the AP and EAD is that will it make the process longer to get an approval for your AOS? By adding these extra steps maybe it slows it down? But you never know if your significant other might need to leave for some emergency, so it's worth it. We didn't do the EAP, since my wife won't be working anytime soon.

The EAD opens up other things for you than just work, many states require a EAD or greencard in order for you to get a SSN, driver's license, state ID, change your name on the SS card etc, and since the greencard can take longer than a year it's good to have the EAD in the meanwhile. So I see no reason not to apply for an EAD. Same with AP, you never know when it's needed. Both are for free.

And no, applying for EAD and AP doesn't affect the AOS timeline.

I've never seen any indication that any processing takes longer.

One case doesn't say anything,  but as an example I got my GC 2 weeks after my EAD/AP (March of this year)... 3 months and 3.5 months after filing.. and there are many such examples.

It would be nice if EAD and AP were automatic when one files AOS. Or just a tick box inside I485 asking "do you want to get an EAD/AP so that your life can go on while AOS is pending......"

It's just a couple more sheets of paper.   US government isn't big on saving trees.
