Hi all,

I'm gathering documents after receiving NO2 for my K1, but I'm confused about the Canadian police record I need.

First, do I need my finger prints taken? The people in Canada who got their K1 approved, did you go through the all finger prints process?

Also, do I need to go to a police office or can I do it at a private company? (Any experience to share about that?)

Thank you

No, you only need a check based on name (including other any names used) and date of birth. Finger prints are only required if you've been convicted of a crime or the name/dob check doesn't come back clean.

I got mine through Calgary Police Service - others here have gone through one of the RCMP's accredited private companies. Some recent stories in the Commissionaires thread below

If you're not in Canada you have to get the fingerprints, but inside Canada as long as you've never been convicted of a crime (I'd go so far as to say arrested either) then a name check will work.

I Googled ' Police records check [ city name ] ' and found the closest place I could to do a police check.  Your regions police website should give you information about how to obtain it.

For me, I just walked in to a York Region Police - Customer Service Unit , gave them 2 forms of ID, they gave me the clean record check, I paid and was done.

As everyone above me has mentioned, fingerprints are required under certain circumstances.

I was living in Canada when I had my police check done.  The rules for my area (and maybe all areas -- I'm not sure) stated that I had to get my check done through the police department that served my municipality, even though that was not the closest police station to my home (I lived rurally so the territories were divided up a little funny).

A non-emergency phone number for your local police station will be available via a Google search.  You can call them to find out what is required for your police check and where to get it done.  They will be aware of the different requirements for immigration police checks as opposed to checks for employment, volunteering, etc.
