On Chat logs as proof of ongoing relationship

Thinking ahead for the proof of ongoing relationship, I was wondering what would be the best way to submit chat logs, since that is what we use the most. One way would be to take a screenshot of the chat (with an online version of a newspaper to show the date in the background), or to print the actual conversation.

I guess my question is...are they interested in what is said in the conversation? or just the fact that we talked that day?

My guess would be that the screenshot is the way to go, but...I still thought I'd ask :innocent:

We printed out the actual conversations. They dont care what you talk about in your conversations, just that you indeed talk consistently. Print out excerpts from conversations over a span of 1 month if possible. Use discretion, dont include sexual material. Use a black marker to mark out such content.

I had the same problem since my fiance and I communicate by webcam, so we don't even have chat records. And we only text or call when it's something that can't wait until our next online meeting. Also, neither of us are camera-happy so we only have a couple pictures of us together. I wrote him some letters and sent Valentines and birthday cards so that he'd have something to take to the interview. I'm in the process of redecorating (to make my bedroom less girly) so I also sent him some paint chips and magazine pictures of general ideas for what I would like to do with the room.

I've no idea if that will be satisfactory, but I'll let you know. His interview is May 2nd.

There really is no reason for them to read your entire conversations. What is important is who is chatting, when, and how often.

What I do is take a screen shot of the chat archive for every day we chat. The archive shows the date, time, who is chatting, and the first part of the conversation. I paste this in a word document with our names, date of chat, and case number in the header. I format the document landscape for printing.

This gives 1 page for each chat rather than tons of pages for each chat. If I provided entire chats, I would seriously be killing an entire forest ;)

I use a free program called Gadwin Printscreen for capturing a screen shot, you can select any part of your screen to either copy to clipboard or save as an image...I use the copy to clipboard option as I am pasting into a word document.

I also use the same program to take screen shots of us a few of times a week while we are on Windows Live Messenger video conference. I include this with the chat archive for that day.

Once a month I gather all of our chat proof and burn it to CD in the even something happens to my PC, and also print our chats for the previous month and file it in a cabinet I have set up for all of the proof we have compiled for the last 2 years.

I'm sure you will have other members suggest different things, and you may find something else works better for you. I have found this to be the easiest to do, and maintain in the long term.

Good luck to you

DISCLAIMER: I am not an attorney, all information provided is from years of research and personal experiences of those affected by returned visa petitions/applications. If this is happening to you, my personal advice is to research the facts, hire a good immigration lawyer who can demonstrate they specialize in returned/denied visa petitions and applications.

Aloha,

I think you're making this more complicated than it has to be. Joan and I use Yahoo messenger, and when the conversation is over, I save the chat as a text file naming it JoanIM-YYYYMMDD - Y being year, M being month and D being day - ie JoanIM-20070420 . Then when you print the conversation, the 1st line will be the name of the file - thus documenting the date.

As far as editing with a black marker, I won't go to that trouble. If we say anything risque, to me that is a futher indication of a real relationship. For god's sake, we're not a bunch of monks and nuns - and I seriously doubt that the interviewer would expect that - even if he took the time to read every word of every transcript.

So the interview went well, though the lady was a bit snippy and impatient at first as if she wasn't convinced we had a real relationship. She asked what seemed like a million questions. Early on she asked how often we talked. Everyday. She asked if he had proof. No. The next question was had I called him before the interview. Both my mom and I had called as he was driving to the embassy to wish him good luck. When he told the woman this, her attitude softened.

Later she asked for proof of a relationship. She wanted to see anything but pictures. He showed her a homemade b-day card I sent in early April. She asked why there was no postmark and he explained that I had included it in the package with the I-134. With that she had him raise his hand and swear his oath. She also told him that she believed him and was convinced that he wanted to go to the U.S. to live with me.

Every embassy and every interviewer are different, but I hope this helps.
