Help us figure out the etymology of "abogado," si C-ma'am ma'am.

This is another word about which we ask Mrs. T-B., "Why don't they just say 'lawyer,' huh man?", si man.

Abogado from the Latin word advocatus (advocate). Advocatus derived from "ad auxilium vocatus" (the one called to help)

it's weird to see people with your same priority date approved before you.

Nothing but to keep waiting, hopefully, November will be my month.

At least I get to see my husband on Sunday, less than a week from now

and enjoy a nice week in Oaxaca, drinking mezcal and eating.

I haven't seen him since July, so it's about time.

It's weird and it's infuriating. Almost there, almost there. You can do it! BTW LOVED the T-Rex!!!!!

Religious extremists: 0, everyone else who enjoys fun: 1

YES!!! I come from a country with official religion, Catholicism; and yet, I have never seen an imposition of religion over "pagan"  celebrations (historians provide a Christian background too) . Here, the ultra religious seem to want to impose their beliefs instead of embracing the tradition without a religious connotation.  Halloween is fun! Dressing up is fun! Why can't some people just have fun?!

Happy Halloween! Have fun, people! :jest: Tbone, I hope your mini-bone is better and can go out to trick or treat

I've a few little things to put up outside. Not going to the amount of trouble I did last year. Spent three days on making illuminated ghosts out of cheesecloth., and hanging them about the place. Lanterns along the path, carved pumpkins, the lot, and never saw a single trick or treater.  So only hanging the lanterns, hiding a few glow-stick faces in the bushes out front, and hanging the flickering steampunk skull on the front door. They have a trunk or treat in town on the courthouse square, and it seems the last few years that's where the action is.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Maybe they feel like they don't have an "us" without a "them" to shun?  They seem to kind of pick and choose what they want to integrate, which is their right, but I just kind of dislike that it impacted the kids.

Lame.  I'm going to come out and say that I despise this trend of "safe" Halloween activities like this.  It is more like lazy Halloweening.  We usually just get rid of most of our candy, the fun is in visiting people's houses!  We will also go to the elder-care home again this year.  They love it.

Wow! Sounds lovely! Did you take pictures? Just like your trunk o treat in town, we have a town Halloween parade and most kids go to it with their family. If Halloween falls on a Friday or Saturday, we get a lot of kids after the parade, but not so much on school nights because the parade ends at 8 PM.

I'll have Mini C dressed up but he is too little for trick or treating, so I'll teach him to hand out candy :D

I think it's lame myself. I always took my kids around and watched them carefully. They still got to have fun, and enjoy themselves the way Halloween used to be.

My Husband thinks it will be an odd Halloween in the square this year. Two weeks ago, they lit the courthouse for Christmas, and all of the lampposts are hung with wreaths and garlands of lights. Bit confusing.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Our next-door neighbors put out their Christmas lights/decorations this week.    I get that we've hit winter now, but it is still too early.

Maybe it is to stand in contrast to our Halloween decorations.

When I was a kid Halloween was huge, but something happened after 9/11, I think that first or second Halloween, in which the rumors started about the terrorists poisoning the candy...  It was all downhill from there along with the Gen-X* helicopter parents.

I've seen a lot of traditions dying out recently, like some of the big Saint Patrick's Day celebrations (they don't even do a big syttende mai here much to the hurt of my bunad-loving heart).  My mother was dismayed that the kids in Minnesota don't get Columbus Day off, because it was always a celebrated holiday with parades and church stuff in New York.  I had to explain to her that we do live sandwiched in between several reservations and the concept of celebrating Columbus is rather impolite.
