Entry 1 of 2018 in Life with the Troll:  The Dane lets me sleep in this morning, but doesn't notice the troll has gotten ahold of my wallet.  I wake up to weird clang clang sound.  He's putting coins down the HVAC register.   Buuuuutttt, that isn't all he's put down there, it is basically the entire contents of my wallet.  The Dane manages to retrieve some of them with the shop vac, but of course it is the section of the house that has a dirt crawlspace with no good access points.  Guess what happened to the rest of my stuff and why the Troll's room is always a little chilly?  The HVAC pipe is not connected properly.  That means the rest of my credit cards and stuff are sitting in the dirt under the house.  Now the Dane has to figure out how to get in there.

 

This was after several months ago giving up on finding the stuff that the Troll had dropped down a different vent and into the horsehair insulation of the house.

 

I'm ready to install hardware cloth on the backside of all of the vents at this point.

Happy New Year to me. Woke up this morning at 0530 to take the dog out, taps still dripping. Woke up at 0900 and the pipes are frozen.

You would have never guessed that you needed pipe warmers where you are...

Oh they are there alright, but the pipes still froze up. I don't think they are working, so will have to be replaced.

It has been colder than normal all over the place, maybe they aren't keeping up with the cold?

 

Several calls my husband has responded to this past week included whole house frozen pipes, including a frat house.  He thought they should just completely demo the frat house after that fiasco.

We have got a heater going next to where we think the freeze up is, which may do the trick. Trouble is, they are calling for records lows tonight.

We definitely have a nasty cold front this week. I notice the most houses around here do not insulate the floors.

Don't know, but I haven't been around all that long. I've got the water running again. I'll leave the heater run out there until dark, then wrap an insulating blanket around the nasty bit. I will go to the hardware tomorrow and get some new heat tape. I let the water drip last night, but it seems that wasn't enough, so I'll leave it running a bit more than that tonight.

 

Sometimes, only now and then, but like now, I wish my Husband was able-bodied. I'm cold right through.
