I had surgery on my spine for Scoliosis 17 years ago (when I was 14, I'm now 32).  It's nothing that I require any further treatment for and it doesn't cause me any major problems.  But I have some rather large titanium rods in my spine that they will very noticeably see on my chest x-ray.

Do I need the GP to write me a letter for this? trouble is I had this surgery done in Australia, so the UK wouldn't have any record of it, they would just be going on what I tell them.

My son has several rods, plates, a cage, and bolts in his body from 3 neck surgeries to the foot plate

it is easy to see these on an xray and tell what they are

personal opinion is "you won;t need to explain them to a doctor

need only to tell at airport when u go thru detectors

I had a surgery on my shoulder that left me with 3 big screws in there, but I had it done privately and so my GP didn’t have any record of it and couldn’t include it in my summary. As the other poster said, you shouldn’t have any problems, but I requested a letter from my GP along with the basic summary (which is just a basic screen print of your history of treatment, no detailed notes) saying that I had never been treated by them for pain or issues relating to the shoulder injury, and that it wasn’t a current “health problem” that did/was likely to impact me severely on a daily basis. The letter cost me £25 and I don’t think I was ever even asked to hand it over, but it was worth it for peace of mind.

Youre in a similar situation to me in terms of your current GP having nothing to do with the past surgery, so I’d advise you to get that kind of letter if you can. They shouldn’t have any problem doing it for you, as they’re simply providing evidence that the surgery isn’t something that you are current or have recently needed further treatment for. Good luck, hope it all goes well for you!
