Hello all,

My fiance had TB when he was a teen, around 15-16 yrs old. I'm completely ignorant of the disease, so bear with me on this one. Will TB show up on a skin test, even though he had it 10 years ago? And if so, will he be disqualified from getting the visa because of this? What would medically disqualify someone?

Thanks!

I'm no Doctor but in my opinion it's more likely to show up as a scar on his lung during a chest x-ray.

I would try and get a letter from your Doctor stating when he had it and that he had no long term problems from it. Only show the letter though, if they bring it up. I wouldn't volunteer the information.

Good luck.

I would suggest His own Doctor.

The forms of the packet 4 i have, says only that HIV possitive is not eligible for the visa. They do not talk about TB specifically.

(I am not a doctor either, but i have had two different kind of test for TB. One is the x-ray, and other one is a reaction that they measured. The doctor give you a shot of something in your arm, and your body made a circle in that place of the shot as the reaction. According to the size of this circle TB is detected. This test is that takes like a week.)

At the London exam they did chest x-rays only, no skin punches. It may vary from country to country.

If the OP's SO had TB at one point, it may show up in the x-ray. In any case it's very wise to be up-front and honest about a TB diagnosis. It could result in a denial or having to file a waiver, or they may just ask for a note from your GP. I really can't remember how they treat past cases of TB.

I believe, only the active form of TB makes you temporary eligible for the visa - it has to be cured first. It will show on the skin test, but I think only x-ray is required. Only x-ray can show if it is active form or not. I am almost sure, but I am not a doctor.

It seems I have recollection of a member whose fiance had also had TB in the past.

If I recall properly, they passed the medical, but the panel physician passed them with a different designation. Almost like getting a "B" on an exam rather than an "A".

As to your question about TB.

There are different forms of TB including Miliary TB, and TB Meningitis.

If the occurence was in the teen years, there may have been damage having occured during this phase.

This is what the others were referring to as scarring. Did this person receive treatments, were they tested, and what were the results. There are a few different options in treatments which include 4 different procedural guides.

The treatments can include different medications, and Vitamin B supplements in some cases.

All these different things can be discussed with, and explained by your doctor. Having had TB, or presenting with symptoms is not an indication for automatic disqualification from an Embassy/Visa stand point. However it may indicate having to undergo treatments prior to being qualified, and/or approved for a Visa. Only the Medical facility authorized by the Embassy in said country of Visa Qualification can say exactly what the guide lines of acceptance are. I know this is a very brief explanation, but only your doctor can get you on the path to resolve those issues as quickly as possible if it is a Visa you are applying for. The sooner you get this done, it could be well on its way to being complete by an Interview Date if acted on promptly. The given time of reference for treatments usually last 9 months to a year, so haste is important if wanting to do get it done in a timely and fortuitous manner.

Hope that helps a little bit, and Best wishes, and talk to your Doctor.
