Got my 18 month extension letter. Its the courtesy copy. But i am sure it serves as as the 18 month extension letter and that I am allowed to work and travel. I am not sure how the original letter is different from the courtesy copy. I will go ahead and file N400 by month end as my 30 day window starts then.

Good luck everyone!

The courtesy copy is an unofficial copy. I doubt it works for travel, it's NOT official... (I also got the courtesy copy.) Getting on the plane in another country would likely cause an issue I fear... If you already have a job, it is not like they will ask. If you don't, even an extension letter can be an issue, since may employers are not familiar w/ it and wouldn't bother to look into it, though they can always check your status w/ USCIS. I am a freelancer so the work part is not an issue for me.

Hi guys - how do i get a copy/new version of my 18 month extension letter? I checked on ‘my case status’ online and its not there.

Can you get another copy if you make an InfoPass appointment?

I got a courtesy copy. My case status doesn't reflect this though, so I wouldn't worry about what it says there. At an infopass you would just get a stamp, but I would wait. The 12-ms one is still valid for a while, you may get the 18-ms one in a few weeks or so.

Yes, I will file for N400 too. Cause I was filling with a lawyer for my previous applications, I will file with my lawyer again.

Hi, everyone! I have been following this thread for a while, without being registered to this website. What I wanted to say is that tomorrow my 3 month window opens for N400 based on marriage. But my lawyer says that if I don't have the permanent green card approved yet I can't apply for naturalization. She says there is a trick something, but doesn't want to say what. I've been already waiting for this permanent gc and I was really hopping to apply for N400 as soon as possible, and now I dont know what to do, to go ahead and apply by myself or listen to my lawyer. Is there anyone that shares the same story as me? Thank you all and have a great week ahead with many approvals. Bye!

Hello LuciaF,

I am in the same situation as you my i751 is still not approved but i have already applied for N-400 and did my biometrics now i am just waiting for the citizenship interview.

Also i am so sorry but your lawyer is stupid at least she could have gave a reason why you should not apply!!!  the only reason that i can think of right now is you cant apply for citizenship under the 3 years marriage because you and you husband are not living together in the same house otherwise i don't see why you should not apply !!!! a lot of ppl have applied for N400 while their 10 years GC was still not approved with zero complications.

Apply for N-400 Online by your self the process is suuuuuuuuper easy. You do not need a lawyer for N-400.

😵 I can't believe what I'm reading. Ask your lawyer what's the reason! Simple! I don't see a reason why you shouldn't apply if you are eligible. If there's anything about your case that you might not want to disclose, I would call another lawyer and ask for their opinion. I have heard from one lawyer you should wait for approval too, but if you can easily apply online, I don't see a problem?

Hey guys, I’m a newbie here. I see that some of you have applied or will be applying soon for N-400. So here’s my situation:

  • got conditional GC on January 14, 2016,
  • applied for removal of conditions on October 21, 2017 in VSC;
  • in April 2018 my case was sent to the local office;
  • crickets…

As per USCIS website, “In general, you may qualify for naturalization under Section 319(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) if you

  • Have been a permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 3 years
  • Have been living in marital union with the same U.S. citizen spouse during such time
  • Meet all other eligibility requirements under this section”

Here's Section 319(a):

Sec. 319. [8 U.S.C. 1430]
(a) Any person whose spouse is a citizen of the United States, 1/ or any person who obtained status as a lawful permanent resident by reason of his or her status as a spouse or child of a United States citizen who battered him or her or subjected him or her to extreme cruelty, may be naturalized upon compliance with all the requirements of this title except the provisions of paragraph (1) of section 316(a) if such person immediately preceding the date of filing his application for naturalization has resided continuously, after being lawfully admitted for permanent reside nce, within the United States for at least three years, and during the three years immediately preceding the date of filing his application has been living in marital union with the citizen spouse 1/ (except in the case of a person who has been battered or subjected to extreme cruelty by a United States citizen spouse or parent), who has been a United States citizen during all of such period, and has been physically present in the United States for periods totaling at least half of that time and has resided within the State or the district of the Service in the United States in which the applicant filed his application for at least three months.

It doesn’t mention anywhere that I can apply for citizenship 90 days prior to being a 3 year GC holder. So, my question to you is when do I apply? 90 days prior to 01/14/2019 or after it? Where did you get the info?

Thanks in advance!
