Get your passport stamped of you're worried about them not renewing your drivers license. They may not even ask for your green card though. Their computer knows wheter it's okay to give you a new license or not, your expiring drivers license should count as picture ID.

My wife was renewing her DL in CA and they refused to do anything without an extension letter. They even had no experience with such letter and had to send it up to Sacremento to their immigration unit to process it. There was a way to get DL without GC or the letter, but it was a lenghty process meant for undocumented folks.

07/07/2015 - Sent AOS for K1 visa (I-485, I-131, I-764)
07/16/2015 - Received confirmation (I-485 receipt was not sent to the MAILING ADDRESS!)
08/05/2015 - Biometrics appointment
08/06/2015 - Received RFE for Initial Evidence for I-485 (need for pay stubs + tax return + letter of employment)
08/18/2015 - National Benefit Center received Response to RFE (Status updated to RFE received)
08/23/2015 - Address change
09/08/2015 - Received letters confirming address change for I-485 and I-131

09/25/2015 - Online status of I-131 and I-765 changed to "Case Approved." Received combo card.

11/14/2015 - I-485: Card in Production!!! Case Approved!

As long as the GC hasn't expired or the extension hasn't expired, you should be fine. Even if it will expire soon. The DMV in FL gave me a real hard time, they had no clue what they were doing. In the end I got an 8 year license with my stamped passport, before receiving my first (2-year) GC.

... Uness you have no extension letter at all, not even one that will expire soon. But even then, there's a number they can call to verify your status. My DMV did (I gave them the number, they refused to call. Some unrelated agency gave them the same number, they called ...). I got the number via a phone call to USCIS, an agent told me to give it to the DMV.

Yea, I have seen this happening across the forum. I'm glad that they're at least transferring these cases to get them out quicker (hopefully).
