I just wanted to share my experience,  i travelled to India and returned 2 days before my GC expired. I didnt want to risk though I carried my extension letter so I returned back before my gc expiration date. Even though I had a valid green card on my return at paris airport they asked me for my extension letter. They also asked me questions like when did I pack my bags and did I pack by myself! Might be a routine but that was not required in my opinion. At US port of entry it was all smooth no questions asked.

Questions about packing your bag and whether you packed them yourself are pretty routine. We just came back from Malaysia and were asked the same. They ask this to make sure that your luggage and hand luggage has been under your watch at all times. If you say someone else helped you pack, for example or that you left your bag unattended in the airport, they will check your bag again.

As most, if not all of us, October filers being processed at the CSC have not received biometrics appointment letters... we took a few measures just to get status updates and ensure our case wasn't abandoned (in hindsight probably an extreme claim... we were just getting anxious).  So we promptly received the NOA with receipt date a little less than a week after our packet had arrived to CSC.

However, we had tried to wait patiently over a month before we started to get anxious.  In result, we had called the USCIS 1-800 number a few times to get the same answer of "we cannot find your case information (based on the app number 1)" and "it's been over a month and your biometrics hasn't arrived??? that's weird...".  Then we had opened a Service Request (SR) mid Dec and received a response by the end of month saying we were added to the appointment scheduler.  Gave it another 2-3 weeks...

We then made an INFOPASS appointment for Feb 8th, then fast forward to today...

NOTE: May be helpful for those in the Seattle ASC service area... but YMMV.

We arrived for our INFOPASS appointment.  We went to the counter to the staff to explain that we had not received our biometrics letter, made several calls and opened an SR.  This staff member was too surprised that we hadn't received it after 1 month.  Since we are over 3 months out now... the staff made a call.  Soon we were brought over past the counter for fingerprint check-in into the waiting area for biometrics.  We spoke with the ASC Manager whom understood our concern but also said that since I-751 are fairly backlogged, shouldn't need to worry about biometrics just yet.  (***This still doesn't explain why most us Oct filers didn't get it, but subsequent months did***).  Anyways... took 10-15 minutes, but the Manager generated the ASC Appointment Notice right there and we were given a number to wait to get biometrics processed.  Long story short... they expedited it for us!  Either way... they told us not to worry... but feels like a burden is lifted not having to worry about waiting for the severely delay biometrics letter.  Lastly, he confirmed that once the 1 year extension passes and if the I-751/CRI-89 has not been approved yet... make another INFOPASS to get the I-551 stamp in the passport.  Also, we plan on applying to N-400 which we can do 90 days prior to the 1 year extension date -- so we'll do that to hopefully push this ROC along.  Anyways... trying to give some hope to the Seattleites, but remember... YMMV.

Now for the longer wait... Good Luck Everyone!

So I just got off the phone with the USCIS rep earlier this morning. She was surprised that I still have not received my biometrics as the usual processing time is 3o days. She filed an inquiry or something and said that I should wait 15 days for a response from them. I suggest you do the same and/or go to your local office with an infopass appointment.

I filed mine to the California Centre on October 29th, and I have received my NOA within a day or two, but, like you, have not received my Biometrix Appointment Letter.  Apparently, Callifornia office is very, very slow compared to the other offices................ As long as you have your letter to travel, you should be okay, as long as you aren't gone for too long.  I called USCIS also, and, they told me that it could take one year.    The officer told me that California's office is working on September 2016!!  Good grief!!

Posted (edited)

I'm glad I found this conversation. I am trying so hard not to worry, but as the days pass, I am getting very concerned that my 1 year green card extension will time out. Here's my I-751 story so far:

24 Oct 2017: Filed petition (service centre is California)

30 Oct: NOA received in the mail with statement that my conditional resident status is extended for a period of one year from the expiration date on my current green card (expires Jan 2019)

21 Dec: Still no biometrics appointment. I called USICS and was told that the California Service Centre is backlogged, currently processing applications from July-2016. However, despite the backlog, I should have had the biometrics appointment all done and dusted within 30 days of my application receipt. That would have been by 26 November. The agent submitted the inquiry below to California to try and find out what’s happening/schedule the appointment. I was told this should be diaried by 22 January 2018. If not, I can call back nearer that date.

5 Jan 2018: Got this email from USICS...

On 12/21/2017, you or your representative contacted USCIS concerning your Form I-751 to tell us that you have not yet received your appointment notice to have your biometric images processed at the Application Support Center (ASC) and you wanted to know whether an appointment would be necessary. Below is a summary of what we found and how the issue has been or may be resolved.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding an appointment to have your biometric images processed at an Application Support Center. Yes, an appointment is necessary. Unfortunately, we are experiencing a longer processing period than what is reflected on your Form I-751 Receipt Notice. Please know that your name has been electronically added to the appointment scheduler. You will receive an ASC appointment notice, by mail, once an appointment date has been established for you.  So please do keep us informed of your new mailing address, should you move.

We hope this information is helpful and appreciate your continued patience.

22 Jan: Still no appointment, so I try logging my own inquiry via https://egov.uscis.gov/e-request/ It promptly gets rejected with a pop up saying my application is within the processing time (so, 'be patient' I guess!)

Fast forward to today and still no sign of a biometrics appointment letter. The current processing time https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/processTimesDisplay.do shows California, as of Nov 2017, is dealing with cases from September-2016.

Excuse me if I am spiraling here, but any advice about what to do (and when) should my extension expire before my case is processed, would be a big help. Does anyone know if that's a likely outcome? I'm wondering how long the backlog has been going on for and if others have had to take action before their extensions expired.

Goodbyegirl, I am in exactly the same predicament as you and almost exactly the same time line.  i called back two weeks ago and I was told by the officer that I could wait as long as one year, and, was told to book an appointment through the Info  option on the USCIS website.  Frustrating..  they are quick to take our $$ but can't give us service!

Hey Shanelle - sorry to hear you're in my boat but welcome aboard! Good to know I'm not on my own. :) I've just read Vincent Chu's post on this thread and he made a infopass appointment and managed to get the biometrics done. I'm wondering if I should give that a shot.

Thanks, Goodbyegirt.  Yes, the journey is always easier when not alone.....  If I were you, I would make an infopass appointment.  I'm heading to Canada in a week, and, won't be back until March,.  If I haven't got my biometric appt by then, I will also do an infopass appointment.  This is just silliness!!

keep in touch!!

So I stumbled across a post on this topic from around October 2017, where the VJ member had success using the 'Non-Delivery on Notice' form:

https://egov.uscis.gov/e-request/displayNDNForm.do;jsessionid=abcbHMBAFC_S5eVnRLI7v?entryPoint=init&sroPageType=ndn

They got their biometrics a week or so after submission, so here goes nothing!

(I'm totally expecting to be told to go away and be patient, but almost 4-months after filing and still no biometrics appointment... I'm trying whatever I can!)

Thank you for your request:

USCIS will review and process the request Expect a reply by March 7, 2018 Your request ID number is SRXXXXXXXXXXXX
