Hi all,

I have my medical appointment booked for the 19th October. I have my doctors appointment in 1 hour and 30 mins. This is to get my medical history. Does anyone know what vaccinations I need before I enter the US? I know a K1 visa doesnt need them til later on but I know I can get them here before I go.

Do they give the vaccinations at Knightbridge? Or can i get them at my GP? If so what ones do I need :(. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks!

  • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
  • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
  • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed.

Many NHS doctors will do them for free, but they are not obligated to do so for immigration purposes. Get the shots documented by your doctor to take to your visa medical exam. If your doctor should say you don’t need something on this list, remember you have to go by US rules and that differs from UK standards. Knightsbridge, the visa clinic will give them if you ask. They are not free. Price list for jabs given at visa medical exam http://www.visamedicals.info/us-price.asp

Wuozopo's given you most of your answer, but for a personal anecdote, here's what I did for the vaccinations I didn't already have.

I talked to my GP, and they were really understanding and gave me what they could for free (it helped that I was working in a healthcare job at the time, so that might have helped them swing a few things), and overall the costs were much lower.  I think I got three or four injections and they cost me a grand total of about £30 or so.

Finally, you'll need the flu shot, and from my experience, if you get it at a clinic or from some big event it's very easy to not get a receipt for it, and then absolute murder to get one in retrospect.  I spend months trying to get documentation of this and it nearly tanked my medical approval - I only managed to get them to finally send me the relevant documents a day or so before the deadline.  Make sure you get proof you got your flu vaccine.

Thank you for your reply both of you its much needed help. I am at my doctors appointment now I see him in 25 mins. So I tell him the vaccinations I need (with document proof) and he will be able to give me them?

If I dont receive any, just making sure I can 100% get them all done at the medical facility?

Your doctor will get you everything he can, and it may or may not be free, but he'll probably try to get them as cheaply as he can for you.

The medical facility can do anything there and as far as I remember they also give you a couple of weeks afterwards to get anything else done or send them any proof you didn't bring, but obviously try not to rely on that last one.

I just had my medical today and I had everything but my flu jab, decided to get it done at Knightsbridge as it would cost me £10 but I may  not have gotten a receipt. Paid £12 with Knightsbridge today and the nurse was brilliant.

Longer than it should’ve because I’m from a small village where the doctors surgery couldn’t quite grasp the concept of a patient care summary <_<

If you call Knightsbridge, they will send you an email with a template attached that you can fill out and take to the doctors that explains exactly what you need.

I'll do that iust incase. Thanks. Mine have said it takes a total of 20 working days maximum with a fee of £50. I am so scared they wont come in time thats why I have pushed both my medical and interview back a week. Its so frustrating and stressful :(

If you can spare the time, book an appointment with the travel nurse to run through all of your vaccines and then you can request the medical summary at the same time with the letter
