I think people don't wake up and think: hmm..lets see who i'm going to discriminate today.

 

To give an example of a situation that can be unintentionally biased: hiring managers tend to hire people that are like themselves.

So its most likely that a qualified person won't get the job because their name sound different, they look different and they have a different background.

 

Is this discrimination?

yes, that's pretty much the definition of discrimination. and also the definition of an untrained, and thus ineffective, hiring manager.

There must be a lot of untrained and ineffective manager then.

 

The flip side is hiring someone because they are from a minority..

correct.

 

most managers are white and as you say, unconsciously hire folks because they're also white -then it's only fair to hire minorities simply for being minorities from time to time, no?

Honestly, I think both suck. I have experienced both and both gave me a horrible feeling.

 

When I was hiring people I would look at their qualities and how their skills would benefit the team. But who knows, maybe I unconsciously did the same.

team? sounds socialist. better to hire based on liking the same football team and/or wearing similar brands of clothing.
