Unique Situation

Good evening folks,

I have an acquaintance with a unique situation I wanted to see if anyone here had any ideas on.

My understanding of the situation is this:

His uncle, who is a naturalized US Citizen traveled to Scotland recently, but before he left did not receive his US Passport in time, and instead traveled using a previously issues British passport.  It worked fine for flying out, however coming back to the US, he's not allowed to get on a flight since he doesn't have a US passport.

He's been to the embassy, and at current they're requiring a passport or official papers certifying him as a US citizen to be mailed from the US to the UK which could take days to months.

Are there any options a US Citizen without a proper use passport might have other than trying to make appointments online to be able to go to the embassy and be told they can't help him right now?

This is a "just the facts, ma'am" passing on of the situation.  It may be that it just has to play out at the embassy however it's going to but I figured if anyone would have any other possible options they would be here.

Go to Canada, cross the land border with proof of citizenship.

Can somebody send his passport to him?

That was my very first thought and suggestion, since the key words in the telling were it didn't arrive in time for the departure, but was supposedly forthcoming.

What proof would he need, not having a US passport?

Not a smart move by the friends uncle

Certainly not.  Supposedly he was assured he was told it would be fine by the departure staff, but pinky promises, hope, and well wishes don't matter to immigration matters.

So what is the current situation on the passport?

Either someone meet him in Canada with his passport or someone mail it to him where he is now. The only other thing he has is his certificate and no way would I mail that anywhere.

It sounds like this has been resolved.  He's apparently been granted some sort of temporary visa to travel and will be arriving back in the country tonight.
