Went to my app today. I literally had everything single possible document they could ask for with me.

I passed the English and civics test and all the n400 app questions were quick and easy, until I got to the selective service part, they said they couldn’t make a decision on my application yet until I provide him with a “advisory opinion” letter which they told me to get from selective service, so I call up selective service immediately after my app and turns out no letter exists,  so I’m back and forth with uscis and selective service, even the uscis level 2 officers told me they’ve never heard of an “advisory opinion” letter before.  The officer who interview me wasn’t really welcoming, I didn’t mind but he asked me some weird questions like “did your marry your wife for a green card?” And “Are you on welfare?”, I answered both easily but his tone was really demeaning in a way. So he basically asked me for a paper that doesn’t exist, idk what to do😕 I’ve made an info pass to speak to someone about this march 15 and hopefully I’ll have an update with some good news then.

What office or city did you have your interview?

There is no other kind of letter you can obtain from SSS.

That’s what selective service told me already three times today, they were really helpful they even offered to speak to uscis with a three way call and explain to them no letter exists and what are they really asking for.

Because they literally told me go get this “ advisory opinion” letter from this number and it’s the selective service number. I’ve also spoken to two uscis officers over the phone and said they’ve never heard of this letter or where I can obtain it! I’m really bummed out now I gotta wait two weeks for my info pass to go over and tell them what do they really need from me.

Can you provide more background info for the benefit of other users who may face the same issue?  Were you in the US as an immigrant (green card, etc.) between the ages of 18 and 26?  Are you now 31 or older?  Did you register with Selective Service?  If not, what did your Selective Service letter say?  Did it mention an "advisory opinion?"  Are these the exact words the officer used?

Yes, and I failed to register, and I’ve provided a status of information letter and a signed statement explaining why I didn’t purposely do it.  I’m 28 and I’ve been in the USA for 4 years married to a  born us citizen with two kids born in the us. I pay taxes, and try to do everything that shows good character. No trips outside us, not even a ticket 😕

And i I literally have a paper with the words “ You must obtain an Advisory Opinion letter regarding your failure to register from 888-655-1825, this office will continue the processing of your application upon the receipt of the Advisory Opinion letter.”

My status of information letter stated I was 26 that exact year and I don’t qualify to register anymore and there wasn’t any notices sent to me register from them, and I shouldn’t be denied any federal right because this etc. nothing that says advisory opinion.

And yep those are his words and what’s on the paper asking from me further process my application.

I googled "selective service" and "advisory opinion" and found this (look at pages 366-7): https://www.sss.gov/portals/0/PDFs/32_CFR.pdf

I have no personal experience with this and this is obviously not legal advice.

I also found the following (1st page on Google, typing "selective service advisory opinion letter"):

In the past, when states completed the "advisory form" for such applicants, the Selective Service System (SSS) responded with an "advisory opinion letter" which, in effect, ruled on an applicant's compliance with the federal requirement to register with the SSS. Since January 1995, the SSS has been issuing “status information letters", indicating an applicant's Selective Service status, in lieu of the previous system of "advisory opinion letters.

F-1 Visa: Academic years 2007/2010.

K-1 Visa: I-129F sent Aug 2013; Approved Jan 2014.

Green Card: AOS sent Feb 2014; Approved Jan 2015.

Removal of Conditions: I-751 sent Nov 2016; Approved Apr 2018.

US Citizenship: Application sent Nov 2017; Fingerprints Nov 2017; Civics/English exam March 2018; Oath May 2018.

Hmm. Maybe your interviewer is old school (pre-1995?).  Keep us posted re: InfoPass.
