lol back to the same old same old lets ban guns argument....anyone who's ever been to Vegas knows that would not work there. If it won't be a gun, it will be a truck or a bomb...Vegas is a free and open place, and my wife and I actually talked about this last May when we were there. For example about how easy it would be for someone to just come with a bomb and blow it up amidst the hundreds of people standing and watching the Bellagio Fountains, or really anywhere on the busy strip a truck, knife, gun or bomb would do the trick. Didn't stop us from doing anything though, as it's the price you pay if you want to live, and live freely. I don't think the solution would be barricading ourselves to death either, but quite honestly we were not surprised about this at all, actually the only ting I'm surprised about is that Vegas hasn't seen many more attacks over the last 30 years, so when we saw it yesterday we felt like we kinda knew it was coming.

It was pretty quick, seven posts in and the three of the first six were me updating the situation.

I completely agree, and I asked a question earlier that has still not been answered.  Why is a mass shooting considered worse than a truck being driven into a mass of people, or a bomb being used?

Sorry that is Europe and we are not Europe at all. We like our firearms, and I will never give up my AR-15 or my AK-47's.

Then mass shootings will carry on. How far does it have to go before enough is enough?

You can tell by the audio coming out that it was not a M60, I may be wrong but sounds like a 5.56 weapon and not a heavier caliber firearm like a M60. You can purchase a M60 in the USA but the background checks and permits required are extensive. They come directly from the ATF and not the state.

I am not familiar with the exact sound so I was relying on my friend's expertise.  One thing that seemed clear is that it was a long shot (~500-1000 yards) and was definitely something automatic.

The same question has been asked about Muslim terrorism.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

People don't kill others intentionally using a vehicle with the same regularity in Europe as Americans do with a gun here. To equate a vehicle to a gun is just ridiculous, guns are only designed to do one thing kill.

I have no idea but here are the gun laws in Nevada.

Nevada laws on gun carry

  • Open carry is legal without a permit
  • Nevada does not ban 'assault weapons' and there is no magazine capacity limit.
  • There are no purchase permits, gun registration, or gun-owner licensing.
  • There is no waiting period mandated for firearm purchases and private gun sales are okay.
  • You do not have to "register" a gun to someone else
  • It is legal to carry concealed or openly in a bar or restaurant, even while consuming alcohol

What could possibly go wrong?

I really hate hearing you talk about firearms and buying/owning them because it is obvious you know NOTHING and just listen to sound bites. So you are saying Open Carry is awful and how any state that allows that is bad. Sorry I have open carried before and i like open carrying in NC when I am back there.

Also if you purchase a firearm from a dealer you STILL have to get a FBI background check no matter what. That is the law.

As I already said equating trucks/lorries with guns is stupid.

Don't worry JimandChristy don't care about the law and just spout of soundbites. They don''t want to actually look in to the law at all.

But trucks are the weapon of choice in all these first world countries that ban guns.  It is either that or some type of knife like France and Canada.  Guns are designed for just one thing, protection.  They are much lighter than carrying around a police officer (yes, this was on a meme from a previous discussion, but I cannot remember who posted it, so credit to the original poster).

As soon as I heard it on the radio I said that is fully automatic not a semi-auto with a fast trigger pull or a three round burst but a full automatic. It may be an M60 due to the distance dampening the sound who knows at this time. But this guy seems like the perfect guy who would have passed all checks. So what can be done with someone who passes everything?

If only they had stricter gun laws in NV like the ones they have in Chicago and D.C. none of this would have ever happened.

There are gangs in other cities around Europe funny how deaths by guns is minuscule compared to the US?

Officials have identified the shooter as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old American who had multiple weapons on the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel, where he is believed to have killed himself.

A statement published by the group's Amaq propaganda agency claimed the attacker was a “soldier of the Islamic State”.

“The Las Vegas attacker is a soldier of the Islamic State in response to calls to target coalition countries,” it said.

Isis also claimed the gunman “converted to Islam several months ago”, without providing more details.

The wording of the release is similar to other attacks that have been inspired, rather than directed, by Isis.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

As was discussed earlier, some feel there needs to be better mental care.  however, as you said, this guy would have not been on the radar of mental experts, so we will probably need annual mental health checks and if you own a gun, you will be involuntarily committed (sarcasm that I hope everyone recognizes).
