"Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than people in other developed countries, a new study finds.

Compared to 22 other high-income nations, the United States' gun-related murder rate is 25 times higher. And, even though the United States' suicide rate is similar to other countries, the nation's gun-related suicide rate is eight times higher than other high-income countries, researchers said.

The study was published online Feb. 1 in The American Journal of Medicine."

so if you want to compare the US to Columbia or El Salvador, you are right. If you want to compare the US to developed countries you are way off.

And if you took a few grand experiments of Democratic socialism, called Chicago, New Orleans,  la,  and DC out of the equation it would fall right in line. Maybe the real statistics we should look at i are are large minority populations in inner cities.

Some things that really bother me...

1) Listen to the live audio of the gunfire.  I can hear at least two rifles firing, maybe more.

2) I watched video from the crowd, facing the hotel while the firing was going on, and I never saw a muzzle flash.

3) How did this guy get so many guns past casino security, some of the best in the world?  Video security is amazing at these casinos.

Saw that "conspiracy theory" video.  I don't know anything about guns nor do I want to.  Comments on that post were:

1. Echos

2. Some guns don't flash or the flash is seen to the side not directly straight on

3. In luggage.  Hotel staff does not search luggage.  Security doesn't inspect luggage.

Those were the comments I read.  Did not research for accuracy.  I seriously doubt anything will ever change.  Too much money and power involved.

No.  Not even close.

Violent people kill innocent victims.  There is no such thing as a violent gun.  I left one of mine in the driveway one day, fully locked and loaded, with 3 spare magazines right beside it.  Sat there from about 0630 until 2130 and never moved.  Never aimed at an innocent, let alone pulled it’s own trigger.  Maybe I got lucky and got one of the non-violent versions, but I think not.

Leaving a loaded gun in your driveway for 15 hours is certainly not good practice. It sounds kind of irresponsible. It's fortunate a small child didn't wander into your anecdote.

This may open  lot of questions later.  This guy was in the hotel since I believe the 28th and he only lived a relatively short distance away, so he certainly had ample time to transport weapons (disassembled) and ammunition if he didn’t bring them all when he checked in.  Hotel staff is essentially trained not to go through guest bags in the rooms, and these particular hotels often see a lot of large bags, or many smaller ones as people come for conferences. As a side note, I was in day before the Consumer Electronics conference and was staying in the MGM Grand, and as we were checking out there were a lot of individuals with very large cases arriving.

If hotels start searching through bags of guests, they may see a reduction in their business.

1) Echoes happen in large open spaces.  Gunfire echoes happen seconds afrer the shot.

2). I know a lot about guns.  Not accurate.

3) Quite possible, broken down, especially over several days.

Your atttempts at humor in CEHST weren’t funny 18 months ago, either.  Your style precedes you.

If that story is true, you absolutely unequivocally should lose your license to carry a firearm. That is reckless, dangerous, inappropriate and stupid.

Gun control aside, someone who "leaves their loaded gun in the driveway one day" should NOT be allowed to own a gun. Stupidity and guns don't mix.

As for this general topic -

I always know I can come to VJ to find people trying to make excuses for avoiding the obvious issue. America is unique in the world in terms of gun violence. It isn't rocket science trying to figure out what should be done. Unfortunately at least for right now what SHOULD be done, won't be done. You can guarantee this won't stay the "worst shooting in US history" for all that long.

That isn't humour man. That is common sense.

Leaving a loaded gun in your driveway is irresponsible, dangerous and stupid. It is not a joke. Too many children have died from getting ahold of guns accidentally. Even if you are just kidding, it is a bad "joke" to make because a loaded gun in a driveway absolutely can be dangerous.

The Texas "firearm death rate" is essentially the same as the US rate in general.

In fact, if you look at the map of firearm related deaths there are several states that stand out. Generally speaking, they aren't the locations you have described (aside from New Orleans).

Guns killed more Americans in the past 50 years than every US war ever

Since the Vietnam War, about 67,000 Americans have died in combat.

In that same time frame, about 1.5 million have died in the US after being shot by a gun.

Gun deaths in this country are just as common as car crashes. Guns kill more people than AIDS, war, illegal drug overdoses, and terrorism combined. And when you look back over the entire history of the country — stretching back to the Revolutionary War — you learn that guns have killed more Americans than all the wars we've fought in combined.

About 1.17 million people have died in combat since the founding of the US. About 1.49 million have died of a gunshot since Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed in 1968, which is about as far back as we could find good data.

The two World Wars and the Civil War were devastating. More than 400,000 Americans died in World War II. But in the past 47 years, guns have killed more people than every war going back to the Revolutionary War, when battles were fought with muskets and the Second Amendment didn't exist.

During the Obama administration alone, guns have killed more Americans than World War I did.

Its not very nice to attack people by calling them stupid. perhaps he made a mistake.

I'm not calling him stupid.

I'm calling the act of leaving a loaded gun in a driveway stupid.

Even if someone were to "accidentally" leave their gun loaded in the driveway (I can't imagine why they would do it on purpose...), I still think that is reason enough to revoke their license. People need to prove that they can be responsible with potentially dangerous items at their disposal. I also think we should be FAR stricter with driver's licenses and they should be suspended/revoked far quicker than they are in most cases.

But he has a point. As a responsible gun owner, you would know that your gun should never be left loaded and unattended, under any circumstances. That is basic gun ownership 101. There are many stories of children playing with guns and firing them by accident. In that case, to paraphrase your failed attempt at humor, neither the gun nor the kid are violent, but it doesn't detract from the fact someone might have ended up as a number in the staggering statistics we see in America time after time.
