What we are glossing over right now but my local radio station here in SoCal pointed out that he must have planned this out for a while because he got a suite on a VERY BUSY weekend. So either he preplanned it or paid top dollar for the suite he was in.

If he was planning to kill himself, that would have been a nice treat. Expensive suite, instead of 72 virgins.

I wish I had that problem of having a CCP but no weapon to use it with. I live in Los Angeles County which is notoriously hard to get a CC permit unless you are rich, a celebrity, or a friend of the sheriff. So I have carry my trusty Kukri knife when I head up to the mountains for work.

I have a Glock 22 .40 so I would like to stick with that caliber but I will let her decide.

Best to let her choose what suits here, could a .40 have too much kick?

I have a CC Permit but nothing to CC! Bit silly.

I live in NC where as a LPR I can open carry but am told I can't get a CC

Maybe he had some foreign financial backing as is currently being claimed.

Kalifornia, well what do you expect, but NC seems odd.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Where in NC do you live, what county? I can find out for you no problem. I am from Greensboro myself.

Buncombe & thanks

When I moved here I was adamant I'd have nothing to do with firearms, after the last few months where there's been a noticeable shift in attitudes and a couple of uncomfortable encounters I'd like the option of defense..

From everything I have read, this guy just snapped and no one saw it coming.  So how does pouring more money into mental health programs fix that?

Out of curiosity, how do people get assessed when they apply for concealed carry license?

People don't just snap out of nowhere, it's not like they wake up one day and their mind goes: yeah, lets kill some people.  I am pro concealed carry btw, but I believe the system should be re-evaluated as in who qualifies to carry a weapon.

My wife felt the same way when she came here from the Philippines. She was freaking PISSED when I got my AK but now she likes the idea of having a pistol in the house just because. I have taught her how to load it, shoot it, and reload it. It is a right here in the USA that we love and alot of other countries quite frankly don't understand it.

Asheville is nice, I actually  had an interview on Friday for a job in Asheville. So I really hope I get it so I can move back to NC.

Fingers crossed, and keep us apprised!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

This is what I have found and it says NOTHING about having to be a citizen. What I know of CCW laws in NC you have to be a valid resident and in good current legal status, you being a PR would suffice for that.

https://www.buncombecounty.org/Governing/Depts/Sheriff/carrypermit.aspx

Criteria of Issuance:

  1. An applicant must be a resident of Buncombe County and a resident of NC for 30 days prior to the application being filed.
  2. An applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
  3. An applicant must not suffer from any physical or mental weakness that prevents the safe handling of a handgun.
  4. An applicant must have successfully completed a North Carolina approved firearms safety and training course.
  5. A Concealed Weapon Permit requires a $90.00 non-refundable fee (which includes a $10.00 fingerprint fee) for a NEW application or a $75.00 non-refundable fee for a RENEWAL application payable online using any major credit or debit card. A convenience fee of $4.00 (plus a credit card processing fee) will also be charged for using the online application service.

Please provide the following for initial application process:

  1. A North Carolina approved Firearm Safety Training Certificate (original certificate)
  2. Valid Driver's License or ID card (all information on license or ID card must be correct)
  3. Naturalized Citizens must bring your Naturalization Certificate or a valid U.S. Passport.
  4. DD214 (if discharged from military).
  5. All required items must be provided at the time of your appointment otherwise the appointment may need to be rescheduled.

Persons not eligible include anyone:

  1. Found guilty or received a prayer for judgment continued or suspended sentence for any crimes of violence or misdemeanor assaults as defined by General Statutes
  2. Under indictment or against whom a finding of probable cause exists for a felony
  3. Found guilty in any court for a felony
  4. Receiving a prayer for judgment continued for any criminal offense which disqualifies a person from receiving a Concealed Handgun Permit
  5. Who is a fugitive from justice;
  6. Who is an unlawful user of or addicted to illegal drugs;
  7. Discharged from the armed forces for other than honorable reasons
  8. Who has been ruled mentally ill or lacking mental capacity
  9. Ineligible to own, possess or receive a firearm under the provisions of state or federal law
  10. Free on bond or personal recognizance pending trial, appeal or sentencing for a crime which disqualifies a person from receiving a Concealed Handgun Permit
  11. Convicted of an impaired driving offense within three years prior to application date

Asheville is crowded and crazy expensive these days

We're 20mins west on My Pisgah - beautiful place :)

I have learned to handle a pistol and am a good shot (so long as the target stays in one place lol) but it's mainly peace of mind

A fair number of states like NC have actually apprised a mental health questionaire to get a pistol permit. Basically asking if you have ever been seen for any type of mental health problems, and if so why?

I was looking up at buying in and around Marshall or Mars Hill but up in the hills. I want to be about an hour from Asheville(the job is there) but far enough away to get away.
