Hi I'm feeling a little overwhelmed right now.  I am a US Citizen my Cuban fiance lives in Cuba. He has never left the country. With news of the Cuban embassy closing is it better for us to marry in Cuba? Or file petition for fiance visa? (The I-129 F form) And if I do file the I-129F form what will he need to sign before I can send in the completed form?  It's very difficult being away from him. LDR's are not for the faint of heart.  It's a little unnerving knowing I have to ask permission to marry the love of my life from someone I have never met. I try to to encouraged and not give into anxiety every time I follow the news. I would truly appreciate any feedback I can get. Thank you in advance.

I-129F form only needed a petitioner signature. However, together the petition, you need to attached letter intent to marry. One is from petitioner, needed petitioner signature, another one is from beneficiary, needed beneficiary signature.

Thank you.....I have another question.

With the situation in Cuba re the US embassy would it be in our favor to marry in Cuba?  I'm so confused as to what our next step should be.

My fiancé is in Cuba, and we received our NVC case number an hour before visas were suspended indefinitely. Having been told repeatedly to wait for the letter containing the NVC case number and required Invoice number, I found the NVC phone # and received it in just a few minutes.

I would suggest you continue with the process (it takes quite a while) with the hopes to be at the front of the line when/if visas begin processing again.

Someone in a linked post asked if it was even safe to travel to Cuba now. Don't buy into the hype, and compare the administrations reaction to countries in which tourists/visitors/citizens have suffered violence by extremists. This is NOT the case in Cuba, it is very safe for visitors. What we see occurring is at the federal level and has nothing to do with the relationship of the US and Cuban populations, with the exception that suspending visas and separating families and loved ones.

We are continuing to complete all required documents and have all our tasks completed in the hopes that someone sane reverses this decision.

Also, marriages in Cuba can be expensive (depending on your financial situation).

You must make sure to know exactly what required documents are needed and bring or have those documents translated.

*** Remember, marrying in Cuba has no apparent benefit upon your partner coming to the United States, if that is your plan. You will then go through the process regardless, meaning now you will be spending $ not only on  the process in Cuba to marry, but then again on the visa process to bring your husband/wife to your home, instead of your fiancé.

Rumor has it the visa process for a married couple vs a fiancé takes much longer. I would search for the website that lists processing dates for different visas and make your decision with that in mind.

As the embassy returns to a "US interests section" instead of a fully functioning embassy, they will only serve US citizens in particular situations, and may return to using the Swiss embassy as a go-between.

Best of luck!

There is no benefit in marrying first.  A lot of people will tell you that it will process faster and that is not true. I swear we were the last of the filers in our month on Visa Journey to get approved but once he did get approved it was all on us (really him) to collect all other paperwork and medical check before our interview (other than the DS-160) and because of that he was one of the first fiancées to arrive.  It goes slow and then BOOM, it is approved and in your hands. My fiancé and I got divorced at least 5 times over the phone before we were ever married due to the emotional stress of the process, it is normal but don't let it get the better of you. Be as organized as possible and think of EVERYTHING as potential evidence of your relationship which you will need to show. GO to the interview in Havana once you guys are approved, it makes a difference. Get connected to ALL couples who are filing at the same time and who are about 1-3 months ahead of you so that you can learn from their mistakes. VJ saved me and the community of other American with Cuban fiancés gave me more pointers, inside info, etc...than any attorney could have, I filled and files all paperwork on my own, it is possible to do without an attorney and this community is really a blessing. Laws change daily in Cuba so again I really stress reaching out to others who are going through your process and who are a few months ahead of you so that you can get feedback from them before you have to submit something or go for the interview. YOU CAN DO IT!! :D
