I believe you will also need to present tax returns. If you file based on your marriage you will also need to show that you and your spouse have joint bank accounts, joint insurance, birth certificates of kids (if any), documents that prove joint ownership of any property.

If you are filing from within the US, you do not need to send passport photos---your photo will be taken at your biometrics appointment.

The fee for the N400 is $725.00 .... not $680.00

Make sure the copy of your green card shows the front AND back.

If you are filing under the 5-year rule  you do not need to submit any tax returns or joint bank accounts,  or anything like that pertaining to finances.

The latest N-400 instructions say to bring tax information to the interview, but does not mention including them in the initial application. Older checklists mention including tax return transcripts in the initial application, so can anyone definitely clarify?

Can I ask where you get this from? Filing under the three-year eligibility rule, I followed the N-400 instructions (dated December 2016) very specifically and did not include any tax information, as it says to bring it to the interview and does not instruct the applicant to include it in the initial mailed application. Based on a complete reading of the instructions, I doubt this would lead to an RFE, but posts here on VisaJourney that say people should/must include taxes in the initial application for naturalization under three-year eligibility make me wonder if this is a previous requirement that people continue to mention or something else.

Good catch. USCIS is inconsistent because the checklist says to include them but the instructions say only to bring them to the interview. For what it's worth, the checklist has a revision date of November 2016 and the instructions are from December 2016, so I feel comfortable going with the most recent.

I asked the question here before filing and was told not to worry about taxes and other such three-year eligibility evidence until the interview itself.

Some people have gotten RFEs for not submitting the tax returns when filing under the 3-year eligibility rule.  If they end up RFE'ing you for it, no biggie, will only delay the case maybe a month or so.

My wife had her interview several years ago under the 3 year rule. I cannot remember if we sent any financials but am positive we did not bring any with us. The interview was over in 15 minutes and she is now a citizen. Her son just did his interview a few weeks ago under the 5 year rule. I know we did not send in anything with his application and he did not bring anything with him. 10 minute interview. Done deal.

With both interviews nothing was ever said nor brought up about any paperwork at all. It was just the language, history, a few questions and that was it. Easiest part of the whole deal.
