I need some help. I want to send some used cell phones to Sierra Leone. W.Africa

to friends and churches.

A lot of people here have used ones they no longer use laying around in their house and don't know

what to do with them because they have new upgrades.

I thought it would be a good idea to collect as many used ones as I can from people donating them

to send over to Africa.

Well, I have my first one. Now here comes the hard part. How do I know which one works

there ?

Cingular just said they have to be unlocked and 900 frequency but he sounded unsure.

Can they get unlocked in Africa ?

Is there a web site to find out exactly which model I can send ?

How about the Nokia 6360. It doesn't even say 900 on the box, looks like new but is an older model.

What about dual bands and GSP ? I am lost. Pleae advice !

They can be unlocked here. Maybe what you need is a quad band? Hmmmm, not sure.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Just a suggestion - perhaps others will have some better ideas..

It might be easier to set up (or locate) a suitable charity that will provide cheap/inexpensive local cell phones in/for those in Sierra Leone.

You can set up a cell phone-drive here, people donate their old phones (of any type, working or not) which are reconditioned/sold and the proceeds from this drive goes to the charity you set up. (that way you're not fooling around with which types work, etc.)

Here's one link that might help - there are others as well.

Hi

Any cheap and cheerful phone that says GSM should work in almost all countries in Africa. If u can let me know which country u want to send the phone through to, I can probably tell u if there are any specific requirements for that country.

But as a general rule, any unlocked GSM phone should work like a charm. It'll be easier to get the phone unlocked in US and it may cost like $10 to $20, but may cost a bit more to get them unlocked in Africa.

Let me know how it goes.

thanks

Santosh

This site says 900 and 1800.

It doesn't look like the 6360 is 900

just do a search for phone model, make (nokia, Motorola etc) and you can look up frequency

Thanks, I looked up a couple of models I have here and none seem to fit the specifications.

I need a GSM 900/1800 dual, tri or quad unlocked phone that is cheap or used in the next few days,

any suggestions ? I just need at least one under $50 for someone to hand carry back over until I have time to find a better one.

Do some carriers like Cingular or Verizon have a box of used ones sitting around at

their stores ? They are closed today in my area.

The time crunch is the bad part.

You can ask but most are probably in people's junk drawers. Ebay would be good but you probably don't have enough time.
