Updating Last Name on Passport

More a general question on my part. For my fiance, once she changes her last name on her US documents for her drivers license etc, what would she need to do with her original passport. I assume she would need to wait until she has her green card and then send it back through her own countries process. But I wanted to make sure we are approaching this properly. Any good articles/tips would be appreciated.

Not sure how it works on Nepal but in Sweden your passport has nothing to do with the greencard. You just need to send in the right documents to the right agency so they can register your marriage and new surname, just like we wuld if we got married in Sweden.

Nepal should have an agency where you go to change your name, contact them and ask about the process. You might be able to do it via the embassy in the US. For Sweden all we needed to do was to send in a copy of our marriage certificate (signed by two other people attesting they were exact copies of the originals)), copies of both our passport bio pages for identification (also signed by two other people) and a form from the specific agency where I filled in my previous name, new name and an explanation as to why I wanted to change my name (because of marriage). I sent it off to the agency in Sweden and my marriage was registered and my name was updated in their system within 2 weeks. Very smooth.

A couple of months later I got an appointment with one of the Swedish consulates here on the west coast to get a new passport via their mobile passport station. Showed them my marriage certificate and papers from the Swedish agency that proved my name change. Got the passport sent to the same consulate about three weeks later where I picked it up.

Very smooth process, I hope it's as easy or even easier for Nepal.

I suspect it won't be. I think the nearest Consulate is Chicago for us. Downside of living in the middle of the country I suppose.

Thank you for the information though. We will have to look into it more when she gets back.
