@Kateryna_I Woohoo what a wonderful POE pic. :D So very happy for you. :)

Well I took out the cornish game hens for our Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. I am making them along with carrots, parsnips and potatoes. For dessert I am making a low sugar apple crisp. Our first Thanksgiving together. :) I do not plan in partaking in Black Friday cause that is just crazy. :P Chris works that day but probably will be quiet at work for him. He also is working Saturday to make up time for when he was sick. I told him I bet if he asked to work Saturday they would jump at the chance cause everyone usually wants Thanksgiving weekend off.

Hello all, haven't been on in a while but have a question about applying for the Social Security Number. On the SS-5 form, #5 Citizenship - I'm assuming I would be 'Legal Alien Not allowed to Work'. In the instructions for the form, it says if you are checking that option then you have to provide a document from a U.S. Federal, State, or local government agency that explains why you need a Social Security number and that you meet all the requirements for the government benefit.

What would I use for that?

Just the passport and a print of the I-94.
I brought a birth certificate just in case.
That's it!

Check your I-94. For a friend it was online after 3 days already!

What exactly is the I-94? I crossed at a land border, I didn't fill out any forms. What should I bring for that?

Just google "most recent I-94" fill in your data and print it.

It's the proof for having entered the states and it shows your admission number (you need that for AOS) and admission class etc. as well as the travel history.

You need it to get a SSN... and, how I just learned by getting to the SSA for getting rejected: It's also needed for the name change on the card after marriage.
Blaghh new try on Monday.

Heeeeey girl! YOU MADE IT! :)

Welcome to the US! :)

I can relate to what you went through at POE. My pack was complete, but the CO started asking why there is only a photocopy of the petition in and not the original!
I started digging in my folder (had everything on me as well), knowing I won't find anything. At secondary at least it came out the photocopy is normal and the grumpy CO was worrying me for nothing! :D

Anyhow, congratulations again and may your life over here be full of happiness!!! :D

You can check on your I-94 already. For a friend it was in there 3 days after arrival already. Possibly mine as well, but I only looked a week after POE.
So.... once it's current you can start! :)

Thank you so much for everything! :)

Just checked web-site and I-94 is ready! :)

Yaaay! You've jumped through all the hoops and made it successfully to the States!

Congratulations!!!

I can imagine how annoying it was to find out about a paper missing from the sealed envelope, but whaat does it matter now? You two are finally together, and we the Marchies are truly happy for you :jest:

As for I-94 - I arrived on Saturday, and when I checked on Tuesday, my I-94 was ready.

Olechka, thank you so much for all the kinds words!

You are right - we are finally together and that is what's most important.

And tomorrow is another big day - meeting with the family :)

Can't wait!

Happy Thanksgiving, dear Marchies!

We definitely have what to be thankful for! ;)

Another paperwork question for everyone -- are/have any of you changed the name of your passports to your married name, or are you just leaving that alone?

I am leaving my surname, not even adding my husband's. I submitted my aos with my name. Not changing anything :)

Btw I just received my Noa1  texts and mail for my aos and work permit, an hour ago. Check not cleared yet. But usually it gets cleared  a day after noa1

I entered USA on monday via airport! i wrote a short review on my profile timeline.

Everything went very smooth!

been in Chicago a few days now.

I tried to get an SSN the next day and the day after i was unable to (my i94 number wasnt in their system yet.) going to try again on Monday.

I actually was NOT given an i94. they no longer give it when flying over from canada to usa .. (they only give it travelling by land or sea)

so i sort of got worried but i was able to print it online without any issues so that was great news!

getting a wedding dress last minute this week  ! getting married at the courts friday! everything has been very busy!

Good luck to all :)

I havnt had time to read much on here with all the unpacking and thanksgiving events etc.. but im sure once the storm settles ill have plenty of time.

I agree just google i94 its right on there once you submit your name and passport # .. you just need to print the paper that says your entry date and entry # ..and K1 visa.  however, when i was in the SSN office (my i94 # wasnt ready yet in their 2nd system so i have to come back) she told me k1 is LEGAL TO WORK.. so dont check off not allowed to work. also bring your birth certificate.. some of them are very picky!

Oh they are wrong about that. :P) WE are not legal to work until we get an EAD. My SSN card says Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization.

Welcome to the US. :) Yeah I got an actual I-94 paper stapled in my passport from the border crossing at the International Peace Garden. The SSN lady was like WOW you hardly see these anymore. LOL

Weird I didn't know what to  check off but the lady told me to check legal to work for k1   (since I knew I needed to file was than I'd be legal)  I'll ask again Monday to make sure I fill it in right

It's funny how much easier the marriage license is than everything else!

What documents did you need (other than passport and i-94) for the SSN? We still have a week wait but it's unclear if we need some other form of ID.

I thought those were the only 2 documents required but the sticklers will also ask for a birth certificate bring it just incase (SOME ASK SOME DONT) I've been twice now since my i94 number wasn't in the system yet. 1st time without a bc and 2nd time they grilled me for one. Super annoying. And they wouldn't even tell me if my i94 number was in their system yet without my bc. So id recommend bringing it incase you get one of the strict employees. Im hoping my # will be ready monday..i know they say 10 days min but who knows ...

Gee I had a great employee all she took was my passport which of course had the paper copy of the I-94 stapled in. She said wonderful this is all I need which was good considering I waited 4.5 hours at my local SSA office to get in. Mine came in the mail a week later.
