Never Janet. :) I had been following your case and was super excited to see that you finally got approved. :D Woohoo November 15th is so close now. You are always welcome here with us crazy and sometimes whiny Marchies. :D

Thank you! It's been a long road....

I hope everyone here is doing well and everything is going smoothly for everyone  :)

After waiting for just over 4.5 hours in the SSA office my number was called. The lady I talked to said I have the patience of a saint. So I left this morning at 9am got there at 10:30 and left there at 3:35 and just got home at 4:45. Yes I will get my SSN in a week to ten days. :D My sweet fiance said "Babe no need to cook tonight let's go out to celebrate you getting SSN". How could I say no to that. HAHA Just gotta do the dishes and wait for him to be home in an hour and a half. Good thing too I am starving. I didn't get lunch because I was at the SSA office waiting. lol

Holy cowballs, 4,5 hours! O_O My wait was max. 30 minutes! Glad you made it! :)

So. I am going to have to move over to the March 2017 filers  (the February filers have gone quiet). I'm Janet. My fiance had his visa approved on October 25th  (in Algeria). He is supposed to arrive in the US on November 15th. Hope you guys don't mind me intruding and following you guys ;)

Great to see you here again, Janet! And even more glad that the long road is leading to a final destination now! I hope you'll have a super smooth AOS to make up for the screwed up K-1! Hang in there, brave girl! Huggsie from VA! :)

omg , this reminds me my home country at the time of the communist era, when we used to line up for groceries or other services, basically for everything that was involving making a purchase or getting a government service..

Ha, I saw that too, when I was a kid. I had relatives around Timisoara, so my mom and I have gone there by car 8 times when I was little and the iron curtain was still up. Experiences I don't want to relive.

Question: Did they let you change your last name on the SSN without having a green card?? How did you do that?
My military ID got made in maiden name as well, since I have no GC and they had to take my passport. Marriage Cert didn't help either.
So I'm facing being put on everything needed for AOS with my maiden name and run and change it all after GC arrived. We wanted to avoid that actually. Blaghhhh :)

I think once you get your work permit or green card, you can start using that as a legal document to change everything and we're kind of out of luck until then.  I did AOS in my married name (I included copies of my marriage certificate with all three applications and I put a sticky note on the all that said "to show name change", as all other documents included have a different last name).  Once I have the work permit, I will go change the name on my SSN and get my license (since it seems to do anything in my married name they want a picture ID..... Which I can't get until I have my EAD 😫).  The bank wouldn't accept the marriage certificate either so I had to use my maiden name for that but they said I can go back and change it when I have a picture ID with my married name.  So much unnecessary running around x2.

That's exactly the same here. Even the military. I've got an ID because I'm a spouse, but I can't have the new name on until I bring a GC to verify. Weird!

That's why I'm curious about how @piranda did that! :)

I didn't go to change it yet, because I got told to come back after I have a valid photo ID with the married name. At the DEERS office (military) they told me the same.
Maybe that's a state thing?

Haha great, I was in Timisoara several times. Does Jimbolia or Krabati ring a bell? Bulgarus, Lenauheim?
That's the "cities" my relatives were spread at!

no , the SSA has same rules all over the US , they will consider your marriage certificate. just bring that with passport and i 94, basically same documents as you had at the beginning plus the name change proof which atm is the marriage certif.

yes, jimbolia  , i know been there a few times ; there are plenty of German families in and around Timisoara and you can slightly  feel the German influence in gastronomy and architecture . great ! next time we meet there to eat spatzle :jest:

Actually that does make sense that they will update it after marriage with your marriage certificate.  I didn't actually go and try because I **think** You can get the "only valid with DHS authorization" removed with your EAD or green card (not sure if both or just green card) so I figured I would wait to do both at once.

I asked the question at the SSA office yesterday and the lady said to me simple after you get married come back in and bring your marriage certificate with your passport and we can change your name then. The bank told me soon as I had SSN and marriage certificate they would change it then too for me. :)

That is one reason I suppose why I might want to wait because of our SSA office always having crazy long times. The guard told me it was worse yesterday because they are closed today but he said its almost just as bad every day. LOL He appreciated the fact that I was prepared to go through homeland security to get in. I made sure to have nothing in my pockets and nothing sharp in my purse before I came. LOL

yes , of course. at the moment your only legal proof of the name change is the marriage certificate. I personally used it both at the SSN to get the SSN on the married name , and at the bank so I change my name on the account.

for the bank I said it before it can vary from bank to bank but SSN will definitely take it in consideration , as @pajobrasaid too

cheers!

Hmmmmm.... might as well go back to the SSN office on Monday.
Sighs... then my military ID will still be in maiden name.
I guess the pedantic German in me will have to accept the fact that not everything is straight hehe
