Has anyone else had trouble getting a SSN?

We went to the social security administration today, and it looked as if they had no idea what I wanted from them. The guy was trying to persuade me that I can only apply after getting my EAD, and didn't want to take into account that I need this stupid number to get married and apply for EAD. I finally managed to persuade him to double check, and he reluctantly processed my papers. So, if anyone here is going to apply for a SSN in a little town, where they don't probably deal with many K-1s, be persistent:) Eric was ready to leave immediately after hearing that I could not get the number, but I was more determined:)

Also, it could be state specific, but the social security officer didn't even want to look at my I-94, and he needed my alien registration number, so it was great that I had my NOA2 with me, just in case.

The guide here on VJ actually has a link to the social security handbook explaining what they need to do because that problem is so common.

Nothing involving SS should be state specific. Wedding licenses is a different story. They didn't need the I-94 because they get it online, which is why the guide here says to not apply until two weeks after POE so it'll show up in their systems.

I didn't have a problem at all! That' strange!

We just had my passport and the recent i94, and that worked: got my SSN card in the mail 4 days after filing!

SSN is the only thing we've done in my maiden name, because I got told it's necessary to have it before AOS and then change the name, because if you never appear with your maiden  name, it seems like you "suddently" popped up, because you never entered the states, having the married name. Don't know if that's true, but I got that info from several people.
I'd not have needed it for our marriage license though.
I'll just change the name on it after I get the green card (they want a valid ID with the name on, so the old passport wouldn't even work for that).

Well maybe I should go and do that by myself one of these days. My fiance works all day and can never go with me.

I did look at the guide but I couldn't print that page out, we ran out of change at the library where we were printing out all the stuff, so I decided  that I could do without it:) Well, I overestimated their professionalism :)

4 days sounds great!

I got the same info about the SSN. Seems like a waste of time to go there twice for those who don't need it to get the marriage license, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

T-minus 11 hours until my fiance's medical appointment. I'm so nervous I can't even focus at work!!! And forget me being able to sleep tonight while he's off to the appointment! Please everyone pray for us that his results comes back fine and he doesn't have to go through additional sputum testing!! He had TB like 10 years ago when he was 17, but doesn't have any medical records since it was in his tiny hometown where he got the treatment. God, I just hope it will be fine!! The thought of the process being delayed 2 more months and postponing the incredible wedding I've been planning breaks my heart!

Welp, sadly my worries and fears were correct. His chest x-ray didn't come back 100% clean and they scheduled him for sputum testing. It will take 8 weeks for the results to come back. My heart is broken. :( I'm staying strong for him because I feel so bad that he has to go through all of this. I will postpone the wedding and most importantly, figure out a way to cope with the fact that it's going to be at least another three months until I get to see him.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man.... Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

Is it just my case or is NVC taking forever with issuing case numbers. It has been almost 4 weeks now and nothing. Others have flown through this part of the process and I was praying this would be the case for me considering how impossibly long they took to issue the NOA2. Sigh...
