I feel sorry for the Puerto Ricans affected this season. I have several friends who have yet to hear from their family members. :(

However, the title of the post is saying that Puerto Rican is American. Puerto Rican is actually qualified American. If they want to be fully American including voting and representation in Congress, they also need to pay the full amount of taxes.

The U.S. has a unique relationship with PR - a territory but not a state. Most of my Puerto Rican friends are proud of being American, but also proud of being Puerto Rican. Some wish to be an autonomous country, others to be annexed as a state with all the regular rights. It's too bad that the discussion generally comes up only in tragic and catastrophic stories.:(

You hit the nail on the head. Time for the free ride to be over. I am sorry but if I have to prioritize relief between taxpayers and non taxpayers, guess who winns

That having been said, we are dying from old age waiting for one of the MDL to post actual evidence Trump ignored PR.

More fake news. Its all they got

Your statement of 'time for the free ride is over' is astonishing.

Then clarify what you mean by the free ride is over. If we do not help many will die. How do you suppose they pay for the rescue ?
What fake news. There is no Trump wall so it won't be necessary to throw anything.

I think the title reflects Puerto Rico is an American Territory and that the Federal Government has a duty to step up.

But you are correct, Puerto Ricans are Citizens of Puerto Rico unless they choose to become the US Citizens

There are more US Citizens paying taxes in Puerto Rico than in Iowa.  So the Taxypayer/Non-Taxpayer argument is weak.

There are more US citizens pay taxes just in Texas than Puerto Rico , so your argument is weak

See how cherry picking straw arguments work, its the go to move of the MDL and usually goes about 1 page before someone causes this to happen

You are the one suggesting shirking our responsibility in PR. I would never suggest we leave a Wyomin, Texan or Iowan to fend for themselves, we shouldn't for Puerto Ricans either.

I never suggested that we not render hurricane aid. I said they need to start paying their fair share.

That's incorrect. Puerto Ricans are Americans. You are an American at birth, if you're born in PR. It's not a matter of choice. They're as much an American as anyone else.

We must only surmise that the hesitancy by the part of the so-called president in extending aid to Americans in PR is due to his inability to act like the leader of a nation. Yet another indication of his unpreparedness for the job he aspires to hold.

Actually, Puerto Ricans pay many fewer taxes than regular US citizens..so it's not necessarily the number of people paying that is relevant, but the percentage of income paid. I read an article this week advising small business owners to move to Puerto Rico to pay a 5% tax instead of 35%

Edit: The article was directed towards small business owners, and the tax they were referring to was income tax.

If they are US Citizens they are Americans.  We are there to support in any way possible and should not back away from that position when the rebuilding effort comes.

It is interesting, all the stories I have read say the supplies are flowing at least to the partially open ports and I believe the airport is up and running.  The governor of PR has praised this administration for its pre-planning and response so far.  Does  governor want more and want it faster?  Sure, that is always the case, but as with anything it takes time to clear the supply routes inland to get these to the more remote areas.  But of course this doesn't fit the narrative the Left Wing press or the DNC folks want to portray.

Puerto Ricans are regular US citizens. They pay their taxes as does everyone else. If they pay less than others, it's something that may be looked into, but it should in no way or form determine the level or support and aid they receive from the country. In the context of their immediate needs, they are no different than TX, LA, or FL.
