Yes, and I said so in so many words.  Because you are self employed the answer to the current income question comes from line 22 of your most recently filed (2017 in this case) 1040 form.  Period.

Got it. Thanks. It was the whole 'showing projections for this year thing' that made me think maybe I could be in luck if I don't hit 125 this year but was doing well in 2018.

What some people do is forget to take some legal deductions and then file an amended return later when they remember them.  Coincidentally, visa interviews can happen between initial filing and the amended filing.  ^_^

Haha. I gotcha. Thanks ;-)

Do whatever you need to do to get to the poverty level for 2017. Perhaps like pushbrk said go easy on the deductions.

See the whole issue is they have to deem the income stable and determine it will continue. For normal employees they can show as little as just proof of employment at or above the level. For self employed you are in fact the "employer" and employee, so they want to see one years of tax returns to show its stable income/work.

Another option is to move to the US ahead of your spouse and secure a job where you earn above the limits.

That is sort of what "employed" people do.  It doesn't work for the self employed.  An employee provides a pay stub as evidence of current income from date of signing forward 12 months.  Self employed people don't have "income" until it appears on line 22 of a 1040 form.  Revenue isn't the same thing as "income".

Understood. Was just hoping I guess but this makes sense. Thanks much
