Finally after my card has been sent back to USCIS I received the card in the mail today.

Good luck to those who are still waiting.

Do I have to carry this card with me all the time or only when I am leaving the US?

I think it is required to be with you at all times. If a police officer or government official wanted to make sure you're legally in the country, they can ask to see it at any time.

I believe someone here said that a clear photocopy of the front and back might be sufficient if the original can be shown within a certain amount of time. But I'd be safe and keep it in your wallet at all times.

Annie and I verified that while it is a misdemeanor to not carry it, most police will accept a photocopy unless you are up to something wrong. In fact in Los Angeles special order 40 specifically prohibits them from checking legal status in a routine situation. as long as you have a Drivers license you should be fine.

It is a requirment of your Permenent Resident status that you have your Greencard on your person at all times...... not a photocopy the real card....

Permanent Resident Card

The Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551, is issued to all Permanent Residents as evidence of alien registration and their permanent status in the US. The card must be in your possession at all times. This requirement means that you are not only required to have a currently valid Form I-551 at all times, but also that you must carry your currently valid Form I-551 on your person at all times. The Permanent Resident Card currently is issued with a 10-year validity. You status as a Permanent Resident does not expire with the 10-year validity. Only the card expires. The card is only valid up to the expiration date and must be renewed before it expires.

You know what, I went to my naturalization interview for citizenship and I told the official that I lost my card. I didn't get fined or anything. She give me a piece of paper to give to the official at the oath ceremony, that's it. The only person who didn't have their green card was me at the ceremony. Everyone else there had it. I still got my certificate.
