how to find gross income

Hello, I'm working on I-864 for my I-485. Because of my husband is a student, his dad is sponsoring me. He is filing his tax jointly with my mother-in-law, so line 37 which is adjusted gross income is total income of dad and mom. Since we are using his income only as a sponsor, we need his total income. Does anyone have an idea what to do? My mother-in-law said line 7 is his income, but is see line 15b and line 17 are filled out which are IRA distributions and rental real estate ...so I wasn't sure if I could use it for total income.
