Hi,

My fiancee has just arrived in the US from Russia on a K1 visa and we are going to apply for the marriage license in our county.  On the online application form before making the appointment at the county office they talk about name changes etc.  My fiancee is unsure if she should enter her patronymic, Aleksandrovna, as a middle name, and is leaning against it.  I am slightly worried since she already has her patronymic on her birth certificate and diploma (in the English translations that I have) that her deciding not to have a middle name might cause discrepancies.

When applying for jobs/schools/tests etc they might see that there is Aleksandrovna after her first name they will assume it is a middle name and wonder why she currently has no middle name now.

Will this be an issue, or not?  Whatever we decide would apply to when she gets green card as well.  I would appreciate any input, thanks.

Does your wife's passport only have her first and last name? My wife has both her first, patronymic (as her middle name for US purpose), and last name on her Belarussian passport. FWIW all her official document in the US has her patronymic name as her middle name. Even our two boys have this as their middle name, so they both have the same middle name.

Yes, the patronymic is on her passport, but only in Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet I believe (only her first and last name are translated into English on the passport itself).  However on her visa I believe Aleksandrovna is written out in English.

I'm Aleksandrovna as well :)

I always use my first name and my last name. I've been in the US for 6 years now and never once I regretted my decision to ditch patronymic. Imagine having to spell it out on the phone? No thanks.

My husband has his patronymic as his middle name. I honestly don't know why his parents left it (he was very little when they immigrated) and I feel like he's not a fan of it. It's pointless. Besides, his dad changed his first name a few years ago, so now it bears no meaning whatsoever.

Hi everyone! My husband and I applied for the CR-1 visa. He is Kazakhstan citizen, from Russian family. In his birth certificate the patronymic is included,, but in his passport is not. Only appears his First and Last name. I am a little bit worried about it. We need to send the Police records to the NVC and I worry about if it will be a discrepancy. Anyone had previous experience with this?

That's the case for every citizen of Kazakhstan. Nothing to be concerned about.

Thank you so much for replying. So, we filled the I-130 as in his passport. Nothing to be worried when they see the patronymic in birth certificate?
