I-131 Reason for AP

Good afternoon everyone,

 

I just have a quick question in regards to the filing of the I-131 with the I-485. I have read continuously that a reason does not have to be provided as AP is given out on the sole basis of being filed correctly with the I-485. However, just for my and my wife's piece of mind, I want to make sure that a reason is, in fact, not needed. From reading advice here on this forum, I understand that the lines provided for DACA does not need to be filled in. However, my worry is for the part where they ask us to write on a separate sheet of paper our reasoning for needing AP. Would providing a reason eliminate the possibility of not receiving one or does it not matter either way?

No, no reason for travel and time when traveling is needed. Leave blank or put unknown.

Here's what I did, and I got my AP without any issues: 

 

On the form, I left everything blank (no dates for proposed travel etc). Then I added this explanation:

 

Full Name 

Form I-131, Application for Travel Document

 

I qualify for Advance Parole because I am awaiting my Adjustment of Status interview. I would like to travel to my native country (name country) to visit my family members. I would also like to take a short trip to (other country) to advance my research. The duration of this entire trip would be four weeks or less.

                                    [printed name]

 

I know for multiple people it worked without this explanation but if you want peace of mind, perhaps this is an idea.

On the form it says to provide a separate sheet of paper with reason for why you qualify and it then refers to the instructions .

In the instructions it goes on to say:

[...c. Advance Parole Document for Individuals Who Are Currently in the United States
If you are in the United States, you must attach:
(1) A copy of any document issued to you by USCIS showing your present status, if any, in the United States; and
(2) An explanation or other evidence showing the circumstances that warrant issuance of an Advance Parole 
Document; OR
(3) If you are an applicant for adjustment of status, a copy of a USCIS receipt as evidence that you filed the 
adjustment application; or...]

The operative word being OR. 

Further down in the instructions it also goes on to say that you may file your i131 together with the i485.

The fact that you're filing concurrently with the i485 is your reason - that's why no further explanations are needed.
