Not sure exactly how long it takes to get the permit typically, but you only have to stay in the US through biometrics, which is often around a month from application, or a little more than that. The application form gives an option to choose a US embassy anywhere in the world for you to pick the permit up when it is ready. My wife did this, and it worked fine. (She applied in middle of summer a few years ago, did biometrics, left the US in August, and finally picked up the permit at the embassy in the following January or so, I think it was.)

"If I file Form I-131 to get a reentry permit while I am in the United States, will USCIS deny the Form I-131 if I leave the United States while the form is still pending?"

"We recommend that you file Form I-131 while you are in the United States. However, you do not have to be in the United States for USCIS to approve your Form I-131 and issue a reentry permit to you if your biometrics (photo, fingerprints) have been obtained. You can indicate on your Form I-131 that you want USCIS to send your reentry permit to a U.S. Embassy, consulate or a DHS office overseas, so you can pick it up from one of those facilities".

About 8-10 weeks.  It's not just the biometrics - dont leave until you know the fingerprints are actually accepted.  Which my wife's have never, ever been the first time - LOL

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I just got a Job in an American company and I would like to have this experience on my CV as I strongly think it will be important for me to get a good job in USA. I have not the time enough to ask for a transference that is why I don't do that in the first place but I am not sure if they will accept 8-10 weeks absence anyway.

Have a lovely week everyone. Thanks

The immigration attorneys for a US company will know about your maintaining your green card while in their employ abroad.

Please discuss your situation with HR so that they are aware that you are a green card holder with a pending offshore position and will need additional assistance.

Please also be aware of the tax consequences of working outside the US.  Inquire if you can have a consultation with their tax advisor if one is available. You should plan to have professional assistance in filing both US and foreign tax returns while you are working abroad. DS is USC working in UK and finds it essential.
