Still waiting on my I-130 to be approved and we are planning a trip over to the US to visit my wife's parents. We planned for end of October and initially we were going to stay a month and leave after Thanksgiving. Now we are thinking of staying until just after Christmas, we were not planning on Christmas in Ireland anyway so we may as well just extend the holiday in the US.

Initially we were just going to hire a car for a month but if we extend it out to until after Christmas we would be paying well over $2000 for rental which seems like a waste of money So we are considering just buying a car and insuring it, then leave it at my in laws until we move over when my visa application is approved.

My problem is finding motor insurance for a non US citizen, any ideas and if so approximate cost?

Im on my husband's motor insurance (he's a USC and I haven't moved over from Ireland yet). Obviously he already had the insurance set up in his name and all he had to do was add me to it. The fact I didn't have an SSN didn't seem to make a difference. I was driving the car over the summer with no issues, but then again I didn't get pulled over or anything lol but the insurance company didn't have an issue with me as a non citizen/ resident being included on the policy.

Shop around and make some calls, it may be easier than you think! In terms of price im not sure, all I know is that my husband's monthly payment actually went down when he added me which is nuts because I've only had my licence for less than 2 years and over here in Ireland that makes things significantly more expensive as im sure you well know 😂

Had a chat with my wife's parents and they just suggested putting the cars title in their name until we move over. Their insurance will cover the car and then it can be put back in our name at a later date, simple with no fuss and cheaper option. I have driven their cars on previous visits with no issues.

My wife being the US citizen could have insured the car but her licence expired long ago. She got her Irish provional and I added her to my policy but she had no interest and never really liked driving in Ireland. Living in Dublin less need for a car and she found it extra stressful driving in the city. Insurance prices are crazy in Ireland, just looking at some of the engine sizes in US cars would be enough for an Irish insurance broker to laugh and show you the door.

Looks like your visa process is just finished, best of luck with your move and thank you for the reply.
