Today, 11/24, passport and visa and envelope delivered.  The magical envelope isn't brown, it's white now.

Cover letter:  Sez log in and pay the immigrant fee to USCIS.  I logged in to pay the fee and the USCIS site sez no payment due.  Sigh.

SO:  I can feel the old travel document in the magical envelope and I am guessing the (still valid) green card we turned in when we applied for the SB1 visa is in there too.  I hope so.  I am guessing that since they don't want an immigrant fee payment they give the green card back at POE.

The SB1 visa definitely says "serves as I-551evidencing permanent residence for one year" on the bottom.  SO:  We'll deal with the immigrant fee after we get back home.

It's been fun.  Last post on this thread.  Anyone else that tries this route - best of luck and may the odds ever be in your favor.

Final advice:  If your spouse or family member applies for one of these things then you, the USC sponsor, better pony up to the counter right beside them and walk through it with them.  My wife would have been hung by the feet if I hadn't joined her at every step.

Update:  US entry on Friday the 23rd.

I have found NOTHING online about what the entry process on a returning resident visa is like.  SO......I'll update after we get through.

We are extremely happy to finally get back home.  We've been out awhile.

SB1 entry - successfully executed.

Very painless. The entry stamp has written note "LPR" and the guy at the counter advised us the visa was good to travel on for a year until the physical green card was sorted out.  Then they took her to the back to process the magical envelope.

We guessed correctly:. Her green card was in the envelope. They took it out, dusted it off, returned it to her.  They also returned the expired travel document and the Xray CD.

Nothing else-just welcome back, anything to declare, etc. It was pretty much like entering on a green card with an extra 30 minute step.

It is my understanding that IF you enter on SB1 with an expired card they issue a new A-number.  If your card is unexpired - they return it back to you.
